Terry McMillan

A member of the Choctaw
coaching staff since 1972, Terry McMillan will be starting his
seventh year in the combination position of athletic director and
head coach. He moved up to the top post after serving as an
assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for 19 years.
During his first year in charge, the Chocs went to the NCAA II
playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. The Chocs finished
7-4-1 that year under McMillan making 1991 the 11th consecutive
year the Tribe has finished above the .500 mark. Scholarships for
athletes were phased out by the university beginning in 1991 and
in 1995 the athletic program began the transition from NCAA
Division II to Division III. During the transitional year 1996,
the Choctaws posted a 4-6 record playing against Division II and
III teams.
Knowledgeable of the game, from the perspective of both a player and a coach, McMillan has the reputation of "being a winner." He quarterbacked the Magee High School Trojans through two undefeated seasons with a 22-0 record. He continued his playing days at the University of Southern Mississippi, lettering four years as quarterback for the Golden Eagles. He received the bachelor of science degree from USM in 1969. McMillan earned the master of education in school administration from Mississippi College in 1974.
After finishing at USM, he joined the staff at Biloxi High in 1969 and remained until July 1972. He served as assistant football coach, offensive coordinator, head tennis coach, assistant baseball coach and taught physical education. The football record during his stay at Biloxi was 24-7. McMillan joined the Choctaw staff in 1972, During his tenure, eight running backs have been drafted into the professional ranks. His offensive teams have led the Gulf South Conference in rushing seven years and led the nations in total offense and rushing offense in 1979 and 1982. The Chocs have led the GSC in total offense in 1975, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1989, and 1990.
McMillan is married to the former Janice Dale and they are the parents of two daughters, Teresa and Tracey. Teresa is married to Jimmy Thomas, a former Choctaw, and they have a 10-month old daughter, Sydney Marie. Tracey is married to former Choc Jim Harrison and they have a new born baby boy, James Bridges Harrison. (top of page)
Despite graduating 10 seniors, the choctaws feel that they are still in contention to win their second-straight American Southwest Conference championship.
The first task is finding a starting quarterback. There are several candidates for the job. Shane Tapper, a transfer student from Pearl River Community College and Bryan Breakfield, a Choctaw backup last season, are the front runners. Jimmy Dottolo, who saw action as a special teams return man last season, will get the start at tailback this year. Dottolo rushed for 343 yards on 43 carries in 1997.
Brad Pickich and Billy Royston will anchor a young but experienced offensive line. Matt Murphy, the team's leader in receptions, and Vance Andry, the leader in yards per reception, will return as All-Conference and All-American candidates. Sophomore Reid Dreher will most likely start at tight end.
Defensively, the Choctaws return a solid linebacker core. Michael Brown, Mike McKelvey and junior college transfer Clint Bryant will anchor the middle of the defense. All-Conference candidates Michael Meurrier, Jeremy Jones and Tim Jackson will return in the defensive backfield. The defensive line will need to improve, although there is some experience at those positions.
All-American candidate Bryant Shaw, will anchor the defensive end position. Shaw has the size, speed and strength to be a great player, according to McMillan. He will also need to be a leader for the Choctaws with the departure of Kyle Fulcher. Finally, All-Conference punter Robert Andrews and Jeremy Bond, the place kicker, will continue to keep their starting jobs. (top of page)
