ABILENE, Texas - Nine teams will battle it out at the Hardin-Simmons Track & Field Complex Friday and Saturday for the 23nd American Southwest Conference Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships.

Conference competition opens at 8:00 a.m. Friday (April 19) with the 10,000 meter run followed by sprint event preliminaries throughout the morning. Field events are scheduled at 9:00 a.m. with 3,000 meter steeplechase closing the day at 6:00 p.m. Saturday (April 20) is finals day with events beginning at 9:00 a.m. and running through the afternoon. Presentation of awards will follow completion of the championships.
 
The ASC Track & Field Championships include nine teams with eight eligible for the title. McMurry is the defending champion on the women's side, having won 12 overall. UT Tyler, who won last year's men's championship, is a non-scoring team. McMurry has won 15 championships on the men's side, while Hardin-Simmons has one on the women's.

Men's Preview
This year's ASC Championships will feature several potential national qualifiers, including 13 past All-Conference winners. In the sprints, East Texas Baptist sophomore Detaveon Lewis ranks 33rd in the nation with a 10.80 100 meter dash time. Senior Raul Villalpando from Concordia Texas is the defending champion in the 110 hurdles and has a time of 15.21, which ranks 46th in the nation this year. Hardin-Simmons senior Hasanai Chanriang has won the 400 meter hurdles each of the last two years and enters the 2019 championship ranked eighth in the country with a time of 53.58.

Ozarks sophomore Michael Harris was the High Point Scorer at the 2018 Championships after winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meters. He has the top steelchase time this season at 10:09.57. Sophomore Mack Broussard of East Texas Baptist leads in both the 5K at 15:14.08 and 10,000 meters in 31:49.01.

Two of the nation's top 4x400 relay teams will battle it out. HSU is 12th in the country at 3:17.96, while McMurry is 18th in 3:19.10.

The men's pole vault should be one of the most competitive events of the Championships, with five of the nation's top 30 in the field. LeTourneau's Jack Miller leads the way tied for sixth by clearing 4.85 meters (15 ft.-11 in.). Teammate Alex Hindman, the 2018 champion and 2019 Indoor All-American, ranks 11th at 4.80 meters (15-9) and is joined by fellow YellowJackets Austin Parrish (16th - 4.73m/15-6.25) and Collin Jones (17th - 4.70m/15-5). East Texas Baptist senior Zack Biles, the 2017 champion, ranks 27th in the nation by clearing 4.58 meters (15 ft.-.25 in.).

The long jump also has five competitors nationally ranked. Concordia Texas senior Gabriel Spivey, the 2016 ASC champion, is seventh with a mark of 7.18 meters (23 ft.-6.75 in.). He is followed by LeTourneau sophomore Stanley Williams, who is 17th at 7.01 meters (23 ft.), Hardin-Simmons junior Tanner Wright and McMurry sophomore Sean Germany, who are both tied for 21st at 6.99 meters (22 ft.-11.25 in.) and LETU senior Keishaun McMillian, who is 27th at 6.96 meters (22 ft.-10 in.).

Germany, who was an Indoor All-American and the 2018 champion, ranks second in the triple jump in the country with a distance of 14.91 meters (49 ft.-10 in.). Fellow junior War Hawk Tiyoshi Hopes is 44th in the country with a high jump of 1.95 meters (6 ft.-4.75 in.).

McMurry senior Krystofer Campos is the defending champion in the shot put and he ranks 39th in Division III with a mark of 15.19 meters (49 ft.-10 in.). He also is 39th in the discus with a throw of 46.30 meters (151 ft.-11 in.). Campos was the 2017 discus champion.

Women's Preview
The women's competition also features 12 past All-Conference performers.

In the sprints, East Texas Baptist sophomore Tia Steen-Baker ranks 17th in the nation with a 100 meter dash time of 12.24 seconds. Hardin-Simmons junior has the top 200 time out of the scoring teams at 25.74, while Louisiana College junior MySherie Johnson leads the 400 dash in 59.98.

McMurry sophomore Josie Drury leads in the 800 at 2:20.68, while LeTourneau junior Alexis Segura is first in the 1,500 meters at 4:57.43 and 3,000 meter steeplechase in 11:42.88.

HSU senior Sydney Tencate will try to become a four-time All-ASC performer. She won the 10,000 meters in 2017 and 2018, as well as the 1,500 and 5K in 2017. Tencate was also the Track Athlete of the Championship 2017. Tencate has the top 5,000 time entering the 2019 meet at 19:17.91.

In the 400 hurdles, ETBU junior Brooklen Butler is the defending champion and is second this season in 1:09.68, just behind HSU's Baley Green with a 1:08.67.

Hardin-Simmons freshman Camryn Aldridge ranks 46th in the nation with a pole vault of 3.48 meters (11 ft.-5 in.). She also leads the ASC with a 10.87 meters (35 ft.-8 in.) triple jump. Fellow junior Cowgirl Samantha Pennese is 44th with a long jump of 5.44 meters (17 ft.-10.25 in.).

McMurry sophomore Savannah Freeman leads the conference with a javelin throw of 37.19 meters (122 ft.), but is trailed by defending champion Gracie LaCroix from Louisiana College at 35.02 meters (114 ft.-11 in.).
