HITTER OF THE WEEK – Gunnar Quick, 2B, Sr., UT Tyler
Gunnar Quick (Lufkin, Texas/HS) went off for UT Tyler last weekend by going 9-for-14 with three doubles, a home run, seven RBI and six runs scored in a three-game sweep of McMurry. Quick was 4-for-6 in the series opener with three RBI and then went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI in the second game. Quick would finish off the series by going 2-for-4 with a double and single to hit .643 against the War Hawks.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Jamie Andriot, RHP, Jr., UT Dallas
Junior right-hander Jamie Andriot (Plano, Texas) recorded another gem for UT Dallas on Friday night as he spun 8.0 scoreless frames with 10 strikeouts in a 6-2 road win over Mary Hardin-Baylor. Andriot gave up just two hits and walked three Cru batters before leaving the game with UTD up 6-0 after eight innings. Andriot is now 8-0 on the season with a 2.03 earned run average, averaging 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings.
NOTABLE PLATE PERFORMANCES
Freshman first baseman Chase Edwards (Chandler, Ariz./Horizon Community Learning Center) went 8-for-14 with seven RBI and had a .928 slugging percentage over a four-game stretch for Ozarks. Edwards recorded a pair of three-hit games during the week and scored five runs.
Stephen Sexton (Pontotoc, Miss./Tupelo Christian HS) collected four doubles while driving in eight this past week as Belhaven extended its winning streak to eight games with a 4-0 week. The senior has collected 15 doubles on the year and in the month of April he is hitting .362 with two home runs and 16 RBI.
East Texas Baptist first baseman Conner Combs (Southlake, Texas/Carroll HS) put together a great weekend as he recorded his 200th career hit in game three of the series vs. Howard Payne. Combs finished with a .923 slugging percentage and had two doubles and a home run as ETBU swept Howard Payne. He also had two or more hits in all three games with three of his seven hits going for extra bases.
Junior first baseman Barry Casey (Southlake, Texas/Carroll HS) went 9-for-18 at the plate to lead UT Dallas to a 3-1 outing last week. In UTD's three-game series at Mary Hardin-Baylor over the weekend, Casey was 8-for-14 with three runs scored and two RBI, collecting his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the series finale. Casey currently leads UTD with a .411 batting average.
Senior designated hitter Jake Valadez (Round Rock, Texas/HS) powered Concordia Texas to a 4-0 week, including a win over defending national champion Trinity and an ASC sweep of Hardin-Simmons. In Saturday's doubleheader vs. HSU, Valadez had seven RBI on the day, including a pair of three-run home runs in the same game. He finished the week scoring four runs, driving in 10 and collected his first stolen base on the year.
Freshman Mark Frankhouser (Cibolo, Texas/Steele HS) had two multiple-hit games in the three-game Mary Hardin-Baylor series vs. UT Dallas. The shortstop doubled and scored the game-winning run in the 2-1 victory over the Comets. Frankhouser scored three runs and drove in another, and walked three times to post an on-base percentage of .900 over the weekend.
Senior second baseman Kyle Jacobs (Leander, Texas/Rouse HS) went 5-for-11 at the plate including two doubles for LeTourneau in the weekend series against Belhaven. Jacobs collected seven total bases and had a run and RBI over three games.
Deauton Delgado (Shreveport, La./Northwood HS) was clutch at the plate for Louisiana College in its non-conference series against sixth-ranked Centenary. The sophomore went 3-for-4 at the plate in Wildcats Sunday win with a home run and four RBI. He totaled six RBI for the series and scored two runs of his own.
NOTABLE PITCHING PERFORMANCES
Belhaven right-hander Chase Birch (Kentwood, La./Jewel Summer HS) kept the LeTourneau bats quiet in the second game of the doubleheader, retiring seven of the nine batters faced, as the Blazers mounted the 8-6, come-from-behind victory in 10 innings.
Ozarks senior Andrew Beck (Conway, Ark./St. Joseph HS) tossed 6.0 innings against Sul Ross State and struck out three.
East Texas Baptist right-hander Logan Sprinkle (Pflugerville, Texas/HS) once again showed that he is one of the best relievers in the ASC picking up two saves in the series sweep of Howard Payne. In game one, the senior entered in the seventh and went three innings giving up just one hit and striking out four batters for save number one. In his second save off the weekend, Sprinkle had one strikeout in two innings pitched.
Matthew Brown (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas HS) pitched 7.1 innings of scoreless baseball in the Concordia Texas series finale vs. Hardin-Simmons, winning 7-1. Coming in relief in the second, Brown allowed only 3 hits while striking out two. He retired 13 batters in a row at one point in a dominant performance.
UT Tyler right-hander Cody Brown (Fulshear, Texas/Fort Bend Austin HS) matched a season-best with 11 strikeouts in a seven-inning complete-game win over McMurry in the second game of a three-game Patriots' sweep last weekend. Brown continued his dominance over ASC hitters with the 11 strikeouts, only one walk and scattering six War Hawk hits. He is now 6-2 on the season and leads the Patriots with 61 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings of work and four complete games.
Mary Hardin-Baylor junior Casey Frazier (Salado, Texas/HS) held UT Dallas to just four hits and one run in out dueling Comet ace Ruben Renteria in the Cru's 2-1 victory. He struck out one and walked one while raising his record to 4-0 on the year since returning from injury.
LeTourneau sophomore Andrew Harlan (Lewisville, Texas/HS) pitched a gem in game two of the Belhaven series, allowing just three hits and two runs. Harlan struck out a career-high nine batters and held batters to just a .115 average in his 7.2-inning effort on the mound for the YellowJackets.
Senior Evan Mativi (Prairieville, La./Dutchtown HS) pitched the final 1.1 innings in the Louisiana College 5-4 victory over No. 6-ranked Centenary in non-conference play. The right-hander picked up his third save of the season in securing the Wildcats win. He did not allow a hit and struck out the last batter of the game.
