HITTER OF THE WEEK – Barry Casey, Jr., 1B, UT Dallas
Junior first baseman Barry Casey (Southlake, Texas / Carroll HS) went 13-for-18 at the plate for a .722 average and eight RBI over four games last week. After opening the week with a 3-for-5 performance in a 10-4 win over Northland College on Tuesday, Casey went 10-for-13 with seven RBI and four runs scored in the Comets' three-game series at Sul Ross State over the weekend. In the opener, Casey reached base six times, going 4-for-4 from the plate with two walks. He finished the week with a .944 slugging percentage, 17 total bases and had a double and recorded his team-leading fifth homerun of the season.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Ryan Cheatham, Jr., RHP, UT Tyler
Junior pitcher Ryan Cheatham (Whitehouse, Texas / Whitehouse HS) faced the minimum 21 batters in a seven-inning complete-game victory over Northland College, allowing only two hits. Cheatham struck out two batters, held NC to a .095 batting average, and walked no one in a 7-0 win to become the first Patriot five-game winner of the season. Cheatham currently has a 1.97 ERA with 24 strikeouts through 32 innings of work this season Opponents are being held to a .168 average against him and have only reached 12 times on walks in those 32 innings.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES AT THE PLATE
Belhaven senior infielder Stephen Sexton (Pontotoc, Miss. / Tupelo Christian Prep) hit three home runs in the Blazers’ 11-3 win over Louisiana College. Sexton went 8-for-16 at the plate (.500), with eight RBI and four runs scored and slugged 1.063. Now at 20 RBI on the year, he ranks seventh in the ASC. With the three dingers this past week, he is second in slugging percentage (.770) and now leads the league in homeruns (6).
Concordia Texas senior outfielder Race Mellman (Refugio, Texas / Waller HS) had a three hit game with a homerun in the win over Southwestern (Texas) Tuesday night. He scored twice and had two RBI on the night. Mellman had a hit in each game against LeTourneau, including scoring twice and another pair of RBI in the series finale. He finished the week with three steals.
East Texas Baptist graduate first baseman Conner Combs (Southlake, Texas / Carroll HS) hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to give the Tigers an 8-5 lead over Mary Hardin-Baylor. He had two doubles in the game and two RBI in the only game of the week.
Hardin-Simmons senior first baseman Colton Parker (Decatur, Texas / Decatur HS) had a good weekend against one of the top Division II teams in the region. Parker hit a three-run homerun that proved to be the difference in a win over Eastern New Mexico.
LeTourneau sophomore outfielder Lee Hosie (Katy, Texas / Katy HS) went .429 (6-for-14) at the plate and picked up seven total bases for the YellowJackets. He racked up two RBI on a sixth inning double against Texas College to help lead LETU to an 8-2 victory.
Louisiana College senior third baseman Seth Stevens (Central, La. / Central Private School) went 6-for-19 over five games with a .632 slugging percentage over five games against Eureka and Belhaven. He hit two homeruns, five RBI, 12 total bases and scored three runs.
Univ. of Ozarks junior outfielder Justin Crider (Dallas, Texas / Liberty HS) hit .636 over three games last week. Crider recorded a triple against McMurry and also scored twice.
UT Tyler senior designated hitter Daniel Williams (Katy, Texas / Mayde Creek HS) drove in four RBI in a three-game non-conference series last week against Northland College. Williams went 5-for-11 with four RBI and was 3-for-3 on stolen bases. Wiliams is now hitting .456 with 31 total hits and 25 RBI to lead the Patriots.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES ON THE MOUND
Belhaven senior pitcher Shane Brown (Braxton, Miss. / Simpson Academy) had a perfect game bid end in the fifth inning against Eureka on Saturday. Brown went the distance, giving up just four hits and had eight strikeouts on 79 pitches. Brown is currently tied for eighth in the conference with 27 strikeouts.
Concordia Texas freshman pitcher Matthew Williams (Austin, Texas / Hyde Park HS) pitched six scoreless innings against LeTourneau in the series finale, as the Tornados won 10-0. Williams gave up only two hits, while striking out three and walked one. It was Williams' third straight win of the season.
East Texas Baptist freshman pitcher Blake Corbin (Katy, Texas / Tompkins HS) came in the bottom of the sixth inning with an 8-5 lead and pitched four innings of shutout baseball against Mary Hardin-Baylor. Corbin recorded four strikeouts in 14 batters faced. He retired the first four batters he faced and gave up two hits.
LeTourneau sophomore pitcher Blake Maxfeldt (Katy, Texas / Morton Ranch HS) earned his first win of the season after facing 16 batters in a four-inning effort. He allowed no runs and three hits, recording two strikeouts as the YellowJackets won 8-2 over Texas College.
Louisiana College senior pitcher Charlie Waddingham (Brandon, Miss. / St. Joseph HS) recorded 7.2 innings of shutout baseball allowing just four hits and striking out eight against Eureka Friday night. He held the Red Devils to a .174 batting average in his longest outing of the season.
Univ. of Ozarks freshman pitcher Jack Waggoner (Keller, Texas / Byron Nelson HS) saw relief in two outings and scattered one hit over two games. Waggoner received the win against Central Baptist after tossing two scoreless innings. He then fanned two in his next appearance.
UT Dallas junior pitcher Jamie Andriot (Plano, Texas / Homeschooled) improved to 4-0 on the season tossing six scoreless frames in a 15-0 road win over Sul Ross State Friday afternoon to open the Comets' three-game series with the Lobos. Andriot struck out seven and scattered four hits in six innings on the mound.
