ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes
RICHARDSON, Texas - Ten student-athletes from five different member universities headline the 2015-16 Winter / Spring American Southwest Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams, the league office announced on Thursday (June 11).
The University of Texas at Tyler led with five Distinguished Scholar-Athlete awards. Michelle Obach in women's basketball, Raven Rodriguez in softball, Frankie Fisher in men's tennis and Conner Benson and Krista Painter in men's and women's track and field. Conner Combs from East Texas Baptist received the baseball award and Justin Jones from Hardin-Simmons was the recipient for men's basketball. Frankie Fischer of Texas-Tyler and Kayla Casey of East Texas Baptist were named the men's and women's tennis award winners and Tanner Landry of Texas Dallas and Elizabeth Davis of Mary Hardin-Baylor received the men's and women's golf awards.
Overall, 93 student-athletes were named to the American Southwest Conference Winter / Spring 2015-16 Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams.
The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams recognizes student-athletes who achieve a high level of academic achievement (a 3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. From that list - limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport - the sports information directors from the 13 ASC member institutions select a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in each sport.
Conner Combs is the third East Texas Baptist student-athlete to receive the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete award in baseball. The ASC Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor recipient, Combs is the first ASC student-athlete in any sport to receive the CoSIDA Division III Academic All-American of the Year award. A D3baseball.com third team All-American, Combs also picked up American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) / Rawlings First Team All-Region honors. Combs led the ASC in home runs (15) and was the league leader in slugging percentage (.734). He ranked second in the ASC in RBI (52) and also was second in total bases (116). He ranked fifth in stolen bases (20), sixth in batting average (.399) and ninth in hits (63).
Justin Jones was named the ASC Defensive Player of the Year, first-team All-ASC and was first-team All-ASC West Division. He set the HSU and ASC records for blocks in a season (122), was selected to the All-South Region teams by the National Basketball Coaches Association and D3hoops.com. Jones led the Cowboys to their first ASC title and to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship. Jones is the second HSU player to receive the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete award in men's basketball joining Jim Walter (2013-14).
Michelle Obach made history as the first Texas-Tyler recipient of the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete award in women's basketball. Obach was the catalyst for a Patriots team that went 30-2 and made its first appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAAA Division III Championship. Named a Division III All-American by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, Obach was one of 10 players in Division III to earn the honor which was selected by a vote of the WBCA selection committee. Obach led the ASC in three-point field goal percentage (.457), ranked third in scoring (18.1), and assists (109), fourth in field goal percentage (.456) and three-point field goals (69) and fifth in free throw percentage (.768).
While just a junior athletically; Tanner Landry has already received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas Dallas. He has a 4.00 grade point average and was recently named the first CoSIDA Academic All-American in UTD men's golf history. He played in 15 rounds for the Comets with a scoring average of 80.27 and finished 33rd at the ASC Championship Tournament. Landry joins Surya Prakash (2010) as the second UTD recipient of the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in men's golf.
Elizabeth Davis led Mary Hardin-Baylor in stroke average (76.95) and was selected to compete in the NCAA Division III National Championship as an individual. Named All-West Region by the Women's Golf Coaches Association, Davis posted five top-five finishes and was the ASC Tournament Individual runner-up. She is a three-time All-Conference and three-time Academic All-Conference selection and received first team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. Davis is the second UMHB player in the last three years to receive the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete award in women's golf.
Raven Rodriguez is the second consecutive Patriot to receive ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete award in softball. A CoSIDA Academic All-American, Rodriguez also received All-American honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The ASC Player of the Year, Rodriguez started all 54 games at shortstop for the Patriots en route to their first NCAA Division III Championship in softball. The Division III active leader with 202 games played, Rodriguez led the ASC in total bases (120) and hits (72), tied for second in home runs (11) and ranked third in RBI (58), slugging percentage (.698) and sixth in runs scored (42).
Frankie Fischer competed in the NCAA Division III National Championships as an individual for the second straight season and played in doubles with teammate Arthur Fagundes.
