RICHARDSON, Texas - Three student-athletes from two member institutions have been named winners of the 2015-16 American Southwest Conference Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award, the ASC office announced Wednesday (June 1) after a vote of the league’s athletic directors.

Two men student-athletes were named co-winners as LeTourneau senior Xavier Scarlett and junior Seth Walters received honors. Mary Hardin-Baylor senior Cheyenne Dowdey is the first Cru women’s student-athlete to receive the award.

Scarlett was selected as the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year for men’s soccer and picked up his third all-conference honor in 2015. Scarlett joins Daniel Iya (2008) as the only other honoree in LeTourneau history to receive the ASC Sportsmanship award. Scarlett also becomes the fourth player in program history along with Iya, Dillon Holt and Ryan Potter to pick up three all-conference honors. In 2015 Scarlett was one of two players to play and start all 18 games for the YellowJackets. The aggressive on-the-ball defender also had seven shots in 2015. After the season, Scarlett joined the Shreveport Rattlers FC.

“Xavier is a very hardworking individual and deserving of this honor, said LeTourneau men’s soccer coach Matthew Haesecke. “As a two-year team captain, he was a great leader to his teammates on and off the field. His commitment to our program will be something we will miss as he never gave anything less than 100 percent to all of his endeavors.”

Walters is a mechanical engineering student with a cumulative grade point average above 3.50. Walters won the Louisiana College Fall Invite (Sept. 21-22), is second on the team with a 77.33 scoring average and scored a team-best individual round of 70. He is the second recipient in LeTourneau history, joining Jacob Clay who earned the honor in 2012. Walters finished tied for 28th at the ASC Men's Golf Championships, shooting a 234 (82-77-75). He volunteers with both Longview and his hometown First Tee junior golf programs and is a singing and guitar-playing worship leader for LeTourneau chapel services.

“Seth is a very deserving individual of this honor, said LeTourneau men’s golf coach Walt Williams. “He is not only an outstanding golfer that won a tournament win this year, but is also a mechanical engineering student. On top of that, he participated by singing and playing the guitar as a worship leader for LeTourneau chapel services."

Dowdey was an ASC All-Conference and First Team ASC All-West Division selection. She finished second in the country in blocks per set and helped lead UMHB to a national statistical championship in that category. She was also ASC All-Academic. Dowdey is a member of the education and English Honor Societies at UMHB and is a member of the Dean’s List. She has always worked hard to be a great player and win on the court but she has also proven to be a true servant leader, helping our team and younger players in any way possible from move in day to helping our younger middles learn their roles. She is a great balance of encouraging, positive, and aggressive. She wants to win every match but has always been respectful in how she treats other teams and how she talks about them. She’s someone you can trust to do the right thing on her own. She has a great will to win but would always treat other teams with a healthy fear and respect on and off the court.

“Cheyenne is a hard working and aggressive competitor,” said UMHB volleyball coach Rob Frost. “She is also very caring and respectful. I could count on her to take great care of herself as an athlete and also take care of her teammates. She would always recognize and respect the talented teams we would compete against and felt she needed to give her very best each match. Cheyenne was a great balance of aggressive will to win and at the same time showing honor and respect to the teams we would see on the court. She is a very selfless hard working person and I speak for our whole team in saying we are excited for her to be recognized with this honor.”

The ASC Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award honors a male and female student-athlete who best displays the attributes of sportsmanship, leadership, citizenship and academic integrity in their athletic, academic and life pursuits. To become a nominee on the conference-wide ballot, a student-athlete must win the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year award in their respective sport. This is the 15th year the ASC has presented its Sportsmanship Award and ninth time the award is being presented after being renamed in honor of the Conference's first commissioner, Fred Jacoby.
