AUSTIN – UT Tyler placed four runners in the top-10 to claim the 2016 American Southwest Conference Men’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday (Oct. 29) on the Spicewood Course at the Balcones Country Club hosted by Concordia University Texas.
McMurry sophomore
Michael Benoit
finished as the medalist with a time of 26:34. Benoit is the first McMurry men’s runner since 2002 (Braegan Enright) to claim medalist honors at the ASC championship and the fifth overall.
The win marks the seventh consecutive title and 11th overall for UT Tyler. The Patriots recorded seven top-20 finishers in the 83-man field as
Bob Hepler
was named ASC Coach of the Year.
Nathan Adams
placed third running a 27:55 on the 8K race in his first year with the Patriots and earned Freshman of the Year honors.
Miles Zeorlin
had his best conference performance of his career, finishing fourth running a 28:03 in his senior season while
Gerardo Viera
was eighth with a time of 28:18 in his final ASC meet.
Justin Tokuz
would sprint to the finish line to take seventh overall with a time of 28:14 to account for the four top-10 finishers. Viera was named the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
Just outside of the top-10 was freshman
Will McIlroy
who ran a 28:45 for 14th and
Marcus Allen
being timed at 28:45 for 15th.
Quinton Bryson
finished 20th with a time of 29:12.
Joseph Parker
of Sul Ross State was named Newcomer of the Year while
Viera
was chosen as the Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
UT Dallas finished second behind the Patriots in the team standings and McMurry was third.
