Gallego, Cox Named ASC Baseball Players of the Week

HITTER OF THE WEEK – Eli Gallego, 1B, Jr., Sul Ross State
Junior first baseman Eli Gallego (Alpine, Texas/Alpine HS) went 5-for-9 with four extra base hits in the series despite playing only the first and third games in the field. His three-run home run in the opener gave the Lobos the lead for good and he later followed with another home run in the third game. Gallego was a single short of the cycle in Friday night's opener and his on-base percentage was .600. He also made several outstanding plays in the field and did not bat in the second game, when he started and earned the win on the mound. For the week, Gallego hit .556, drove in eight RBI, had two home runs and 14 total bases, scored five runs and recorded a 1.556 slugging percentage.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Cameron Cox, RHP, Sr., Concordia Texas
Senior pitcher Cameron Cox (Round Rock, Texas/Stony Point HS) continued to dominate conference hitters last week, as the right-hander hurled his third consecutive shutout in a 7-0 win over visiting Hardin-Simmons this past Saturday. Cox allowed only five singles and struck out five while improving to 5-0 on the year. Cox has logged four complete games, a trio of shutouts and a 1.62 ERA in six starts this season. In ASC play, Cox is 4-0 with a 0.64 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 28 innings of work. He has limited opposing league hitters to a .144 batting average.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES AT THE PLATE
Concordia Texas freshman outfielder Michael Evan (Cameron, Texas/Yoe HS) led the resurgent Tornado offense last week, as the he hit .625 (5-for-8) with one double, a triple and three RBI. Evan racked up eight total bases, which translated to a 1.000 slugging percentage, and he reached base at a .667 clip. He did not strike out in any of his 12 plate appearances in a three-game sweep of Hardin-Simmons over the weekend. Evan also scored four times and swiped two bases. He is hitting a team-best .433 and leads the conference with 20 RBI. In conference play, he has been even better, hitting at a .457 clip.
Howard Payne junior catcher/designated hitter Matthew Daniel (Cleveland, Texas/Cleveland HS) finished the week 5-for-14 from the plate with a 3-for-4 outing in the series finale with Texas Dallas. He had two doubles and drove in two runs while drawing four walks for the week.
Mary Hardin-Baylor junior outfielder Chase Burrow (Groesbeck, Texas/Groesbeck HS) had back-to-back three hits games and drove in seven runs over three games last week. Burrow scored four more runs and had four extra base hits. He slugged .846 while batting .461 in leading the Cru to a 2-1 record.
Louisiana College sophomore designated hitter Dylan Roy (Tioga, La./Tioga HS) was the Wildcat’s leading hitter during their weekend series against Texas-Tyler. Roy collected five hits during the three game set, including two in each game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Ozarks senior second baseman Taylor Parker (Hot Springs, Ark./Lakeside HS) homered and drove in four runs to lead Ozarks to a 8-5 win over Sul Ross State. For the week, he hit .500 and posted a .875 slugging percentage.
Texas Dallas senior outfielder Pierce Fly (Boerne, Texas/Boerne HS) went 5-for-7 from the plate with four walks as the Comets picked up a three-game road sweep at Howard Payne over the weekend. In Friday's doubleheader, Fly was 4-for-5 as UTD earned two one-run wins over the Yellowjackets. He ended the series with a 1-for-1 performance with three walks, three runs scored and two RBI. Earlier in the week, Fly was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice in a 4-3 loss at Arlington Baptist.
Texas-Tyler sophomore outfielder Blake Bonnin (Baytown, Texas/Barbers Hill HS) helped lead a balanced Patriot offense that scored 21 runs and belted 29 hits in a three-game sweep of Louisiana College. Bonnin finished with a team-high six hits, 11 total bases and finished the week with one home run and a .545 batting average.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES ON THE MOUND
Howard Payne sophomore pitcher Chad Anders (Midlothian, Texas/Midlothian HS) picked up his second win of the season in a 6-2 decision over Univ. Dallas. Anders threw 4.0 innings in relief allowing just two hits and no runs.
Louisiana College senior pitcher Ron Anders (Zachary, La./Zachary HS) made his first start of the year on Sunday in the Cats series finale against Texas-Tyler. Anders was solid on the mound against the Patriots powerful lineup with five straight scoreless innings to begin the game, tossing 45 of his first 60 pitches for strikes.
Ozarks senior pitcher John Singler (Muskogee, Okla./Muskogee HS) threw a complete game and did not issue a walk while striking out two in a win against Sul Ross State.
Sul Ross State junior pitcher Justin Vajgert (Kyle, Texas/Lehman HS) earned his second victory of the season with a strong performance against Ozarks, limiting the Eagles to two runs and seven hits in six innings. He walked just one batter, struck out three and retired six of the final seven hitters he faced.
Texas Dallas senior pitcher John Quisenberry (Wylie, Texas/Wylie HS) picked up his first two career saves as he locked down the first two of three wins in a sweep at Howard Payne. In 3.0 total innings, Quisenberry gave up just two hits and no walks as he shut down the Yellowjackets in both outings. In Friday's 4-3 win, he tossed the final two frames, giving up just one hit and the pitched the seventh inning in Saturday's 2-1 win over HPU to open the doubleheader.
Texas-Tyler sophomore pitcher Cason Adams (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall HS) helped lead the Patriot’s pitching staff to a stellar weekend as the rotation combined for a 1.80 team ERA while totaling 22 strikeouts and allowing just 16 hits in a three-game sweep of Louisiana College. Adams finished with a 0.00 ERA in six innings-pitched and led the team with eight strikeouts.
