Brandon Gould Named ASC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brandon Gould, G, Sr., Howard Payne
Senior guard Brandon Gould (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest HS) averaged 24.0 points in wins over Texas Dallas and ASC leader Hardin-Simmons. Gould scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds with five assists in the UTD win. Gould then followed that up with 31 points on 12-of-15 (.800) shooting, five rebounds and seven assists at HSU. He was 4-of-5 from behind the arc and 6-of-7 from the line for the week. His 31-point performance was just one point shy of tying his career high of 32 points.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES
Concordia Texas senior guard Andre Potts (Houston, Texas/Reagan HS) posted career-highs of 32 points and 8 three-pointers in a 114-97 win over rival Mary Hardin-Baylor last Monday. Potts averaged 20.5 points and 4.0 rebounds during a 1-1 week for the Tornados.
East Texas Baptist senior forward Justin Felicia (Atascosita, Texas/Atascosita HS) had one of his best shooting weeks of the year making 80 percent of his shots from three-point range and the foul line. He went 4-of-5 from the arc, 8-of-10 from the line and was 8-of-14 from the floor (.571). Felicia averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game with 11 points against Ozarks and 17 against Texas-Tyler which were both wins on the road. In the OT road win against UTT he went 4-of-4 from the foul line in overtime which was his only free throws of the game. His made his first two at the 4:21 mark to break the 78-78 tie as ETBU never lost the lead again.
Hardin-Simmons sophomore center Justin Jones (Wichita Falls, Texas/Holliday HS) had 17 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots in the loss to Howard Payne and had 19 points and eight rebounds in the win at Sul Ross State.
LeTourneau senior guard Josh Thornton (DeSoto, Texas/Grace Prep Academy) scored in double digits in back to back games, last week. He had 10 points in both contests against Texas-Tyler and Ozarks.
Louisiana College junior forward Anthony Gaines Jr. (Shreveport, La./C.E. Byrd HS) recorded consecutive double-doubles in both wins over Concordia Texas and Mary Hardin-Baylor. The two wins put LC in a tie for second place in the ASC standings with UMHB, East Texas Baptist and Howard Payne. Gaines scored 22 points against Concordia and 21 against UMHB to extend his streak of 20-plus point games to four in a row.
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior forward Jerard Graham (Wichita Falls, Texas/Burkburnett HS) averaged 20.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists over two games. He also had four steals and shot 44 percent from the field.
Ozarks senior forward Ted Beard IV (Tyler, Texas/John Tyler HS) posted a pair of double-doubles during Ozarks 1-1 week. Against East Texas Baptist, he had 10 points and 10 rebounds in a loss. He then came back against LeTourneau and scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a win.
Sul Ross State junior guard Rocky Feliciano (El Paso, Texas/Hanks HS) led the Lobos in scoring last week averaging 17.5 points per game. Feliciano shot over 50 percent from the field (.571) and from the three-point line (.667). He scored a career-high 27 points against Hardin-Simmons, making 9-of-13 shots from the field. It marked the fifth time this year Feliciano has scored 20 or more points in a game.
Texas Dallas senior guard Matthew Medell (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS) averaged 15.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game last week as the Comets split a pair of ASC games. He finished the week with an 18-point performance, hitting 7-of-11 shots, as she sparked UTD to an 81-67 home win over Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon. Medell has now scored in double digits in the last six games.
Texas-Tyler senior forward Chris Rios (Houston, Texas/Galena Park HS) ignited the Patriots with 56 points in two games, including 33 against LeTourneau, leading the Patriots to their first ASC win of the year. Rios also poured in 23 points against East Texas Baptist in a 92-83 overtime loss.
