ASC Announces 2015 Volleyball Awards

RICHARDSON, Texas – Texas Dallas senior setter Kayla Jordan, East Texas Baptist junior outside hitter Mallory Sanders were named Co-East Division Most Valuable Players and Hardin-Simmons senior middle blocker Corrie Hall was named the West Division MVP to highlight the 2015 American Southwest Conference volleyball teams, the ASC office announced Wednesday (Nov. 4) after a vote of the league’s head coaches.
 
Jordan was an integral part of the Texas Dallas offense and led the ASC in assists with 462 for a 12.16 set average. Jordan engineered a Comets’ attack that led the conference in kills (14.24) and ranked second in hitting percentage (.261).
 
Sanders led the ASC in kills (141), ranked eighth in service aces (12), ninth in blocks (43) and had 93 digs. Sanders anchored an ETBU offense that led the league in hitting percentage (.262) and ranked third in kills (495).
 
Hall ranked in the top-10 in three categories including fifth in kills (131) and ninth in hitting percentage (.286) and blocks (43). Sanders also recorded 43 blocks, 28 digs and 12 service aces.
 
East Division award winners include Texas Dallas libero Fayna Zeng, the Freshman of the Year, LeTourneau sophomore outside hitter / middle blocker A.J. Campbell, the Newcomer of the Year and Texas-Tyler senior middle blocker Amanda Colegrove, the Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
 
Zeng is one of just two ASC players to record 200 digs in conference play and ranked second with a 5.26 digs per set average. Campbell ranked 10th in the ASC in blocks per set (1.00) and had 36 kills against ASC teams.
 
Texas Dallas was named the East Division Coaching Staff of the Year. Head Coach Marci Sanders and assistant coach Zach Villarreal led the Comets to the East Division title with a 27-2 overall record and an 11-0 mark against conference opponents.
 
West Division award winners include Mary Hardin-Baylor outside hitter Shelby Russell, the Freshman of the Year, Concordia Texas junior setter Nacole Miller, the Newcomer of the Year and UMHB senior middle hitter Cheyenne Dowdey, the Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
 
Russell led all ASC freshmen with 123 kills on the year and ranked sixth in the ASC. She also ranked 10th with 3.51 digs per set. Miller ranked sixth in assists (194).
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor was named the West Division Coaching Staff of the Year. Head Coach Rob Frost and assistant coach Sarah Osterbye led the Cru to a 17-10 overall record, a 10-2 mark in conference play and the West Division title.
