Jessie Ramos
and Mary Hardin-Baylor junior defensive end
Teidrick Smith
received player of the year honors to highlight the 2015 American Southwest Conference football awards, the ASC office announced Thursday (Nov. 19) after a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Ramos
was named the ASC Offensive Player of the Year. The Division III leader in receiving yards (1,443) and yards per game (144.3), Ramos also ranks tied for sixth in receiving touchdowns (16). The ASC career leader in all-purpose yards (5,900), Ramos ranks fourth in Division III in all-purpose yards this season (1,892) and fifth in yards per game (189.2). Ramos is the first HSU player named the ASC Offensive Player of the Year since 2008 and the seventh Cowboy overall.
Smith
was named the ASC Defensive Player and Defensive Lineman of the Year. The first player in ASC history to receive both awards for two consecutive seasons, Smith led the ASC in sacks (14) and tackles for loss (21) with both numbers ranked in the top five in Division III.
Hardin-Simmons senior
Marshall Agan
received ASC Offensive Lineman of the Year honors and junior kicker / punter
Nico Francino
was named the ASC Special Teams Player of the Year.
Agan is the second Cowboy in three seasons to be named the league’s top offensive lineman and the eighth overall. Agan anchored a Cowboy’s line that paved the way for an HSU offense that ranks eighth in Division III in scoring (45.9). Francino is the first HSU special teams player of the year recipient since 2006 and the third overall. Francino hit 44-of-49 extra points and led the ASC in punting (43.6).
Sul Ross State wide receiver
Byron Jones
is the first Lobo named the ASC Freshman of the Year since 2007 and the fourth overall. Jones led all ASC freshman in receiving yards (991), ranking third in the conference, and set the ASC record for most receiving yards in a single game with 285 in the Lobos’ win over Wayland Baptist (Sept.26).
East Texas Baptist Coach
Joshua Eargle
is the second Tigers coach to receive ASC Coach of the Year honors joining Ralph Harris (2003). Eargle led ETBU to a share of its first ASC title since 2003 and second overall. East Texas Baptist recorded the most wins in conference play (4-1) since 2011 and the most overall wins (7-3) since 2003 when ETBU won its last title (9-3).
Twenty one players made a return appearance on the all-conference teams led by HSU senior Jessie Ramos. Ramos joins a short list as one of just five players in ASC history to be named a four-time all-conference selection.
Mary Hardin-Baylor led all teams with 16 all-conference selections and had seven first-team members. Hardin-Simmons recorded 13 all-conference picks and led with 10 first-team honorees. East Texas Baptist received five all-conference selections, Howard Payne and Sul Ross State each recorded six and Louisiana College had five.
