MARSHALL, Texas – Fourth Quarter dominance by the East Texas Baptist University offense combined with the strong defensive effort canned Louisiana College’s thought of extending their winning streak over the Tigers, 44-34. ETBU scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win in the American Southwest Conference opener.
Tyler Bates caught a career-high 274 yards just missing the game record for receiving by three yards and added to his NCAA Division III leading touchdowns with two more. He now has 11 touchdowns on the year and five in the last two games. Roberson toted the ball 27 times for 173 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He has now recorded two rushing touchdowns in the last three games each. Josh Warbington finished the night going 17-of-26 for 321 yards and two touchdowns.
The win is the first for ETBU since 2007 when they won in Pineville, La., 27-23, on October 27. This win also starts ETBU off at 1-0 in the American Southwest Conference which is a first since 2009 when they went 2-0.
Down 24-20 heading into the fourth quarter after not scoring any points in the third quarter, ETBU’s offense exploded for 24 unanswered points to take the win, 44-34. ETBU had the ball five times in the fourth quarter and scored three touchdowns and had one field goal with the last possession ending in victory formation. After only producing 18 yards of offense in the third quarter, the ETBU offense unleashed for 178 yards and three touchdowns.
Dominic Haggerty put the momentum back in ETBU’s favor after Louisiana College tied the game up at 27 at the 10:19 mark in the fourth quarter. Haggerty took the ensuing kickoff 92-yards on a kickoff return touchdown to put ETBU up for good, 34-27. Ryan Travis connected on a 33-yard field goal at the 6:08 mark making it 37-27, and then Roberson rushed from two yards out for his second touchdown of the night with 2:38 left to play putting the ball game way, 44-27. Louisiana College scored with 1:29 left in the game but didn’t the on-side kick as ETBU ran out the clock for the win.
The two teams battled back and forth in the first half. Bates took an 80-yard reception to the house for the first score of the game at the 9:51 mark making it 6-0. Louisiana College’s defense picked off a Warbington pass at the six-yard line to go ahead in the game, 7-6, early in the first quarter. Roberson gave ETBU the lead back at the 2:52 mark when he ran from 20-yards out for the 13-7 lead. After Louisiana College hit a field goal, Jourdan McNeill romped in from 27-yards out for a 20-10 advantage at the half.
C.J. Johnson led the team with 10 tackles and two sacks. David Jaynes produced two sacks on the night for 15 yards.
ETBU’s offense produced 547 yards of total offense with 321 yards in the air and 226 on the ground. ETBU held LC to 442 yards of offense. ETBU’s defense forced two turnovers and recovered one.
Off next week with their bye week, ETBU will next play at home on October 10th hosting Texas Lutheran at 6:00 p.m.
Austin College 34, Howard Payne 27 –

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Howard Payne's second half charge came up short falling 34-27 to Austin College Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Gordon Wood Stadium.
Despite the loss, HPU place kicker Joshua Martinez broke the Howard Payne career field goal record on his 35 yard field goal with 10:41 left to play in the game. Martinez now stands at 26 for his career, the previous record was held by Drew McMasters with 25 (2002-2005)
Austin College got on the board first on a 13-yard touchdown pass five minutes into the game. Joshua Martinez answered for the Jackets with a 40 yard field goal to make the game 7-3. After the field goal for the Jackets, Austin College connected on a 26-yard pass to make it a 14-3 game with 39 seconds left in the opening quarter.
HPU answered back with a Patrick Hernandez eight yard touchdown to cut it to a four point game, but a 34-yard field goal sent Austin College into halftime leading 17-10.
Austin College tossed its third touchdown pass of the game in the third, and after HPU answered back with a touchdown pass of their own, a three yard shovel pass to Colby Mica to cut the game to 24-17 Austin College.
Colby Mica led all receivers with eight receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown.
Austin College added a fourth TD pass, this time from 19 yards out to make it 31-17 with 5:51 left in the third quarter.
Howard Payne got a touchdown pass from Richard Young to DeAndre Walker to end the third, and a field goal by Joshua Martinez cut it to a 31-27 game with 10:41 left to play.
AC then forced a fumble on the Jackets next possession returning it 52 yards. Austin College then hit a 30-yard field goal to make it a 34-27 final.
Richard Young was 18-of-32 passing for 236 yards and two TDs. Collin Rome had his best game as a Jacket with 73 yards on 18 carries.
Jason Disney led all tackles with 16, six solo followed by Gage Smith and Jordan Longoria with nine each. Donald Preston and Abner Reyes each recorded a sack.
AC's Woodyard finished the game completing 16-of-28 passes for 206 yards with four touchdowns and one pick, and Madison Ross rushed 25 times for 118 yards.. Hayden Schilling and Stevie Reyna each had eight tackles for Austin College.
Howard Payne stands at 0-4 overall and Austin College improves to 3-1. The Yellow Jackets will play at Texas Lutheran in Seguin, Texas next Saturday at 6:00 pm.
Huntingdon College 35, Belhaven 21 –

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers fell to Huntingdon College Saturday afternoon 35-21 at H.T. Newell Field.
For the second straight week, Belhaven carried a lead into halftime, but were unable to stop the opposition in the second half, being outscored 28-11 today in the final two quarters.
The Blazers took the lead in the first quarter as Clayton Webb connected with Jacob McNeill on a 26-yard pass play to cap off an 11-play, 90-yard drive.
Webb would finish 24-of-37 for 229 yards with the one touchdown and 229 yards.
Huntingdon answered with a touchdown early in the second half, capitalizing on a 54-yard punt return to start the drive. The finished off the final 41 yards to tie the game at 7 with a 3-yard touchdown run.
Belhaven answered back on the next drive, which was also started with a big special teams play as Kevin Shief returned the opening kickoff 38 yards to get Belhaven to near midfield.
Following a 49-yard pass from Webb to Shaquan Holmes that put Belhaven on the Hawks 3-yard line, the Blazers were unable to get in the end zone and Alonso Acosta kicked a 19-yard field to give the Blazers a 10-7 lead.
It was the first of two field goals for Acosta in the game, who moved into third all-time on Belhaven's Career Field Goals Made list, with 17 career field goals.
Huntingdon started the second half by scoring back-to-back touchdowns to start the second half, including a touchdown on short field position after a Webb interception.
Acosta would then close the scoring for the third quarter by kicking a 21-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 21-13.
The Hawks would respond with a pair of touchdowns in less than three minutes. After a touchdown run gave Huntingdon a 28-13 lead, the Hawks stopped Belhaven on downs and quickly capped a 3-play, 12-yard drive with another touchdown to go up 35-13.
Tristan Hibbeler came in for Belhaven late in the fourth quarter and capped a 7-play, 75-yard scoring drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Tevin Wink, the first touchdown for both players in their collegiate careers. Hibbeler would then connect with Holmes on a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 35-21.
Marquis Hedge led the way on the ground with 19 carries for 77 yards in the game, while Nate Williams had eight receptions and 69 yards to lead receivers.
Eleven receivers caught 29 passes in the game for 300 yards for the Blazers.
Alvin Vaughn led the Blazers for the fourth straight game this season with 11 tackles, including one for a loss, and he also picked up a fumble recovery in the game.
Isaiah Swopes had a big game defensively for Belhaven, getting three pass break ups early on before getting his first career interception.
Steven Joiner and Stefon Hayles each had seven tackles in the game. Hayles joined in with Alonzo Peavy on the Blazers first sack of the season.
The Blazers will head back on the road next week and will leave Mississippi for the first time this season with a trip to the No. 3 ranked Crusaders of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. It will mark the first-ever game for Belhaven against an ASC opponent in the NCAA Division III and ASC eras.
Langston 32, McMurry 29 –

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - McMurry University's football team overcame an early 13-point deficit but, in the end, lost to NAIA foe Langston University, 32-29, at Moses Miller Stadium. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 2-2 overall, while the Lions improved to 2-2.
LU led 13-0 in the first quarter. However, McM battled back to eventually take a 21-20 advantage in the third quarter, thanks to a touchdown pass from David McHugh to Tyreace House off a fake field goal.
The Lions would score 12 unanswered points to lead by a 32-21 count in the fourth quarter. McMurry clawed back to within three points, but a late interception thwarted the War Hawks' comeback bid.
