RICHARDSON, Texas - Longview News Journal Sports Editor Jack Stallard was recognized by the Sports Information Directors of the American Southwest Conference as its Outstanding Media Service Award recipient for the 2013-14 academic year.

“I’m honored," said Stallard. "It has been a privilege covering LeTourneau University since I arrived at the Longview News-Journal in the fall of 1997 and being able to chronicle the teams in the American Southwest Conference after LeTourneau joined the league a year later. I consider this award a team award, one shared with my sports staff, and I’m excited about the upcoming year and the chance to give the athletes in the ASC the coverage they deserve.”

Stallard and the staff at the Longview News-Journal took an active approach in the publicity of LeTourneau athletics in 2013-14. He provided coverage of the teams, who achieved unprecedented success last season with stories and photos on the front page of the sports section.

"A valuable tool for a sports information director is to have a relationship with the hometown newspaper. Since my arrival, at LeTourneau, our relationship with Jack Stallard and his staff has been phenomenal," said LeTourneau Sports Information Director Danny Kambel. "They have provided tireless attention and significant reporting of our student-athletes and coaches."

A native of Erwin, Tenn., Stallard is in his 29th year of covering sports in East Texas. He attended Kilgore College in the spring of 1986 where he began as a sports correspondent for the Longview News-Journal and Kilgore News Herald. Stallard quickly ascended to the role of the sports editor of the Kilgore News Herald at the age of 21 in 1987. After a three-year stint at the Kilgore News Herald, he spent the next seven years as the sports editor at the Lufkin Daily News (1990-97). Then, he returned to the Longview News-Journal as the assistant sports editor before being promoted in 2007 to his current position as the sports editor.

The ASC Outstanding Media Service Award has been presented annually since 2003 to recognize outstanding coverage of a member institution, the conference as a whole and NCAA Division III athletics. The award is voted on by ASC Sports Information Directors.
