All-Time Winners
RICHARDSON, Texas – Sul Ross State sophomore basketball player
Zakk Revelle and Howard Payne senior tennis player
Samantha Guerrero have been named winners of the 2013-14 American Southwest Conference Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award, the conference office announced on Monday (June 2) after a vote of the league’s athletic directors.
Revelle and Guerrero each made school history as their school’s first recipients of the ASC Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award. Revelle is the first Sul Ross
State student-athlete overall to receive the award and Guerrero is the first Howard Payne women’s student-athlete to accept the honor.
Revelle (Burnet, Texas/Burnet) started 25-of-26 games for the Lobos this season and averaged 2.4 points per game and ranked third on the team with 47 assists. A mainstay at point guard for the Lobos shooting .457 from the field and .357 from behind the arc, Revelle received the ASC Sportsmanship Award for men’s basketball for the second consecutive season. A communications major with a 3.195 grade-point average, Revelle also serves as a member of the Sul Ross State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
“It’s nice to see him recognized; he’s a quality teammate and a great ambassador for Sul Ross. He’s a shining light for our athletic program, if you spend five minute with Zakk, you know what kind of person he is. I’m pleased to see that he was honored,” said Sul Ross State University Interim Director of Athletics Bobby Mesker.
Guerrero (Big Lake, Texas / Reagan County) led HPU with 10 overall wins in singles play and had a team-best 6-3 mark against conference opponents. On campus this year, she was a member of the HPU cheer team (2 years), a student intramural director (2 years) and a member of Delta Chi Rho sorority (4 years). In the fall of 2013, she worked at the Boys & Girls Club teaching three weekly dance/cheer classes to girls ranging in age from 7-18. In 2013, she was an honorable mention All-West Division honoree and second-team All-West Division in 2012. With a 3.24 grade-point average, she will be a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree at the end of the year.
“We are very proud of Samantha and her accomplishments at Howard Payne University. She is an outstanding young lady and very deserving of this honor," said HPU Athletic Director Mike Jones.
Revelle and Guerrero will now represent the American Southwest Conference on the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Award ballot. The NCAA will announce the Student-Athlete Sportsmanship awards in July.
The ASC Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award honors a male and female student-athlete who best displays the attributes of sportsmanship, leadership, citizenship and academic integrity in their athletic, academic and life pursuits. To become a nominee on the conference-wide ballot, a student-athlete must win the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year award in their respective sport. This is the 15th year the ASC has presented its Sportsmanship Award and ninth time the award is being presented after being renamed in honor of the Conference’s first commissioner, Fred Jacoby.
