RICHARDSON, Texas – Texas-Dallas senior basketball player Kyle Schleigh and Texas-Tyler senior softball player Lauren Robenalt have been named 2013-14 American Southwest Conference Athletes of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday (June 11) after a vote of the conference's sports information directors and Outstanding Media Service Award members.

The ASC Athlete of the Year award, in its 15th year, recognizes the men’s and women’s student-athlete whose athletic accomplishments during the current athletic year best contributed to their sport, their institution's overall athletic program and to the conference. Each ASC member institution nominates its campus athlete of the year recipients to the conference-wide ballot.

Schleigh and Robenalt are the first Texas-Dallas and Texas-Tyler student-athletes to be named ASC Athletes of the Year.

"I am honored to be named the ASC Athlete of the Year,” said Schleigh. “I have competed against and got to know many great athletes in the league during my
career and this a very humbling award. I was fortunate enough to be a part of a great program and I owe all of my successes to the coaching staff at UTD. I knew
coming into college that I wanted to make a mark and this award shows that hard work pays off in the end."

Robenalt added, “I'm so honored to have been given so much by my conference and my school. My accomplishments are a direct reflection of all the hard work and dedication that's been poured into me by my parents, coaches, and teammates. I'm happy to receive this award in hopes to honor them for all they've done for me.”

Schleigh (Houston, Texas/Kingwood HS) led the Comets to the most wins in program history as UTD posted a 27-4 overall record and went 20-2 in ASC play, winning the regular-season title. Schleigh sparked the Comets to an ASC Championship for first time since 2009 and guided UTD to a berth into the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen. Schleigh earned All-America honors from both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) as a second-team selection and a D3hoops.com third-team honoree in addition to being named the ASC Offensive Player of the Year. He was named first-team All-ASC and selected to the ASC All-Defensive Team. Schleigh was named CoSIDA Academic All-District as well as Academic All-ASC. Schleigh finished the year ranked seventh in the ASC in scoring (17.5), sixth in rebounding (8.0) and fifth in assists (4.1). Additionally, he ranked sixth in the ASC in steals (2.1), blocked shots (1.2) and ranked eighth in free-throw percentage (.785). Schleigh ended his career as UTD’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, steals, blocked shots and ranked second in assists, and is ranked sixth all-time in the ASC in points and third in rebounds.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to coach Kyle Schleigh,” said Texas-Dallas men’s basketball coach Terry Butterfield. “He is one of the finest young men I’ve worked with during my 32 years of college basketball and is the embodiment of what Division III athletics is all about. Kyle has represented our basketball team
and university in a superior way and I am very pleased the American Southwest Conference is choosing to recognize Kyle with such a prestigious honor.”

Robenalt (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis HS) has been a four-year standout for the Texas-Tyler softball team. Selected First-Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) this season, Robenalt hit .451, while totaling a league-high 74 hits and stole 24 bases on 25 attempts. The only senior on the Patriot’s softball team, Robenalt led Texas-Tyler to an impressive 41-6 overall record, and the 2014 ASC regular season and ASC Championship Tournament crowns. A First-Team All-ASC selection, Robenalt also excelled in the classroom, being named the Texas-Tyler Student Athlete of the Year, and was named a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society. The outfielder ended her playing career with the Patriots second all-time in hits with 230, just 29 off the all-time ASC mark.

"Lauren represents everything you want in a student-athlete”, said Texas-Tyler softball coach Mike Reed. “She has been a champion on the field, in the classroom, in the community, and on our campus. It has been a real honor to coach Lauren over the past four years."
