ASC Announces Baseball Awards, Josh Vasquez Named Player of the Year

RICHARDSON, Texas – Sul Ross State junior Josh Vasquez was named Player of the Year to highlight the 2014 American Southwest Conference baseball teams, the ASC office announced Monday (May 12), after a vote of the league's head coaches.
 
Vasquez (Lubbock, Texas/Frenship HS) started all 40 games for the Lobos and ended the regular season ranked in the top three in six league categories. Vasquez led the league in hits (60), tied for first in triples (4) and ranked third in batting average (.373), runs scored (38), total bases (81) and at-bats (161). He
stole 13 bases in 14 attempts and recorded a .956 fielding percentage.
 
Concordia Texas senior Scott Weinschenk (Brenham, Texas/Brenham HS) received Pitcher of the Year honors after finishing the regular season ranked in the top four in six league categories. Weinschenk led the ASC in strikeouts (84) and tied for first in wins (7). He ranked second in ERA (1.77), third in opponent batting average (.216) and runs allowed (20) and is fourth in inning pitched (86.1). Weinschenk also picked off four base runners and did not give up a home run all season.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Dakota Parsons (Conroe, Texas/College Park HS) was named Freshman of the Year. Parsons ranked eighth in hits (50) and 10th in batting average (.350) in addition to 21 RBI, 23 runs scored and 61 total bases.
 
Concordia Texas senior pitcher Kiel Harmon (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) and Mary Hardin-Baylor junior outfielder K.J. Stark (Killeen, Texas/Killeen HS) were named Co-Newcomers of the Year.
 
Harmon led the ASC in opponent batting average (.173) and ranked third in ERA (1.78). Harmon recorded a 5-1 mark on the mound and had 21 strike outs in 50.2 innings pitched.
 
Stark ranked second in runs scored (39), tied for second in walks (28) and tied for seventh in total bases (69). Stark pounded out a .463 slugging percentage, 27 RBI and had 47 hits including nine doubles, two triples and three home runs.
 
Texas-Tyler senior outfielder Billy Lirely (Waynesville, N.C./Tuscola HS) was named Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. Lirely started 39 games for the Patriots this season racking up 38 hits with 17 RBI and 17 runs scored. He hit .288 at the plate had 44 total bases. Defensively, Lirely had a .984 fielding percentage and had only one error in 59 putouts.
 
LeTourneau (Robin Harriss, Aaron Gentry, and Chad Kinney) received the Coaching Staff of the Year Award. The YellowJackets recorded their best season as a conference member winning 22 games against ASC teams and played in their first conference baseball championship tournament.
 
Concordia Texas leads all teams with 13 all-conference selections including three first-team members. Texas-Dallas had 10 while LeTourneau and Texas-Tyler had nine apiece to round out the top three teams with the most all-conference selections.
