No. 16 Texas-Dallas Headed to Wisconsin for NCAA Division III Sweet 16

RICHARDSON, Texas - After the most dramatic win in program history Saturday night, the Texas-Dallas men's basketball team learned Sunday morning that it will be heading to Stevens Points, Wis., for the next two rounds of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
The No. 16 Comets (27-3) return to action Friday against No. 3-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater (25-4) in UTD's third-ever trip to the NCAA D-III Sweet 16. No. 1 Wisconsin-Stevens Point (28-1) will face Emory (18-8) in Friday's second game. The two winners will face off Saturday in the Elite 8. Game times at UWSP's Quandt Fieldhouse have yet to be set.
UTD earned its trip to the "Sweet 16" after a 78-77 buzzer-beating overtime win over No. 12-ranked Whitworth Saturday in the second round of the NCAA D-III National Tournament. The Comets opened the weekend with an 85-70 victory over Chapman Friday night.
Senior forward Kyle Schleigh is averaging 24.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game through the Comets' two national tournament games. Junior guard Nolan Harvey, who hit the game-winning three-pointer against Whitworth, is averaging 16.5 points and 5.0 assists. Senior forward Dmitriy Chernikov is averaging 14.0 points per game and junior guard Matthew Medell is adding 12.0 points per game.
The Comets are shooting 41.9 percent from the field through two playoff games and are averaging 20 assists per game.
Wisconsin-Whitewater advanced to the round of 16 after home wins over Northwestern (Minn.), 79-55, Friday and Augustana (Ill.), 87-68, Saturday. The Warhawks entered the NCAA Tournament ranked second in the nation in scoring margin, outscoring opponents by 17.5 points per game through the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament. Junior guard K.J. Evans leads four Warhawks in double figures with 16.2 points per game.
Friday will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The Comets are 0-2 all-time against Wisconsin-Stevens Point and have also never faced Emory. UTD advanced to the round of 16 in 2009 and 2010, moving on to the national quarterfinals in 2009.
