RICHARDSON, Texas – Louisiana College sophomore quarterback Easton Melancon, Hardin-Simmons junior running back Kerry Sloan and Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore defensive end Teidrick Smith won player of the year awards to highlight the 2014 American Southwest Conference football awards, the ASC office announced Thursday (Nov. 20) after a vote of the league's head coaches.
For the first time in conference history the ASC honors Co-Offensive Player of the Year winners as Easton Melancon and Kerry Sloan received the league’s top offensive award.
Melancon (Ama, La./Hahnville HS) is the second consecutive Wildcat named ASC Offensive Player of the Year and the third in the last five years. Under center for a league-leading 501 snaps, Melancon finished the season ranked second in the ASC in passing yards (2,973) and touchdowns (24) and led LC to its fourth runner-up finish in the conference standings in the last five years.
Sloan (Harker Heights, Texas/Harker Heights) is the first HSU player named the ASC Offensive Player of the Year since 2008 (Justin Feaster) giving the Cowboys a league-leading seven awards. In nine games Sloan led the league in rushing (948) and finished the year as the only player in the conference to average more than 100 yards a game on the ground (104.2). Sloan finished second in the ASC with 14 rushing touchdowns and averaged more than five yards per carry (5.1).
Smith (Hallettsville, Texas/Hallettsville HS) is the fifth player in league history to be named the ASC Defensive Player and Defensive Lineman of the Year in the same season. Smith led the conference with nine sacks including seven solo and ranked first in tackles for loss (13) for a cumulative total of 60 yards lost. Smith follows former Cru teammate Silvio Diaz who claimed both awards in 2013.
Louisiana College senior Ira Jewitt (Shreveport, La./Calvary Baptist Academy) was named the ASC Special Teams Player of the Year. Jewitt set or tied three ASC records this season and has been named all-conference at defensive back and return specialist for three consecutive seasons. One of the league’s premier threats, Jewitt led the nation in passes defended (25), recorded 41 tackles including 37 solo and returned two of his three interceptions for touchdowns. On special teams Jewitt broke the ASC record for longest punt return at 91-yards and is one of five conference players in ASC history to return a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Jewitt ends his collegiate career as one of just three ASC players to record four combined touchdowns on kick and punt returns and interceptions in a single season joining former LC player Justin Charles (2002) and Javicz Jones of Mary Hardin-Baylor (2012). Jewitt leads all three players having scored four touchdowns in just nine games edging Charles with 10 and Jones with 14. Jewitt recorded eight career touchdown returns (punt, kickoff, interception), tying him with current LC co-defensive coordinator Justin Charles for the school career record.
Louisiana College running back Devin Sylve (Belle Chasse, La./Belle Chasse HS) was named the ASC Freshman of the Year. Sylve, who rushed for 462 yards and six touchdowns, follows Melancon as the second consecutive LC player to receive freshman of the year honors and the fifth Wildcat overall. A second-team all-conference selection, Sylve wrote his name in the LC record book earlier this season rushing for five touchdowns (Nov. 1) breaking Wayne Davis’ 11-year old school record. Sylve also rushed for 172 yards in that game and is the first LC running back to record consecutive 170 yard rushing games since 2003.
Louisiana College senior Brandon Porsche (Opelousas, La./Westminster Christian) is the second Wildcat named the ASC Offensive Lineman of the Year (Matt Miller, 2003). A two-time all-conference selection, Porsche anchored an offensive line that led LC to an ASC third-ranked scoring offense (34.8) and a runner-up finish in the ASC standings.
Mary Hardin-Baylor coach Pete Fredenburg was named ASC Coach of the Year. A nine-time league coach of the year recipient, Fredenburg led the Cru to their fifth consecutive perfect season (10-0) and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament for the 13th time in the last 14 years. UMHB has won its last 54 consecutive regular season games and 37 straight ASC contests.
Seventeen players made a return appearance on the all-conference teams led by Louisiana College senior Adan Olivares, Jewitt and Hardin-Simmons junior Jessie Ramos with their third all-conference awards.
Mary Hardin-Baylor led all teams with 16 all-conference awards. Hardin-Simmons received 14 all-conference members and Louisiana College had 13 and led all teams with 10 first-team selections. East Texas Baptist had eight selections, Sul Ross State had seven and Howard Payne received three all-conference awards.
