RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor posted a 14-2 record against league opponents to win the regular season title and the right to host the 2014 ASC Volleyball Championship Tournament, Nov. 6-8, at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton, Texas. The bracket for the six-team double-elimination ASC Championship was announced Saturday (Nov. 1) following completion of conference play.
No. 1 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor (14-2) will have a first-round bye and play the winner of game two between No. 4 seed Texas-Tyler (10-6) and No. 5 seed Concordia Texas (9-7). Texas-Tyler makes its second consecutive tournament appearance and fifth overall. Concordia Texas also makes is second return trip to the conference tournament. Both teams have played in four out of the last five tournaments.
No. 2 seed East Texas Baptist (13-3) will also receive a first-round bye. The Tigers make their league-leading 13th ASC tournament appearance and their third consecutive. ETBU will play the winner of the No. 3 seed Texas Dallas (12-4) and No. 6 seed Hardin-Simmons (8-8) match. Texas Dallas currently holds the longest active streak for most consecutive ASC tournament appearances with 11 entering the 2014 event. Hardin-Simmons is a five-time ASC Champion and has won the last four consecutive titles.
Top-seeded Mary Hardin-Baylor makes its fourth consecutive ASC tournament appearance and eighth overall. The Cru won their last three matches to secure the ASC regular season title by one game over East Texas Baptist. The last time UMHB won the ASC Volleyball Championship was in 1998, in the inaugural tournament that was also held in Belton, Texas.
The 2014 ASC Volleyball Championship Tournament is the 17th postseason event dating back to 1998. The ASC tournament winner earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship.
