No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor 56, Sul Ross State 9 - Box Score
ALPINE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team took some time to get started, but the Cru rolled from there on the way to a 56-9 victory over Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in Alpine, Texas. No. 2 UMHB improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Lobos to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the ASC on the year.
 
Sul Ross State opened the scoring with a 25-yard run from freshman quarterback James Davis on the Lobos first possession. UMHB fumbled away a scoring chance on its next drive before finally answering with junior running back Michael Carpenter's nine-yard touchdown run with 3:44 left in the first quarter. SRSU blocked the extra point and returned it for two points for a 9-6 Lobo lead. Junior quarterback Zach Anderson broke off a 45-yard scoring run on the next UMHB drive to give the Cru its first lead of the game at 13-9. Anderson then added touchdown passes of 34 yards to junior wide receiver Marcus Wimby and 49 yards to senior wide receiver Kamray Runnels to give UMHB a 27-9 halftime lead. Freshman wide receiver Duane Thompson ran for three consecutive touchdowns in the third quarter. The Cru added a safety and freshman quarterback T.J. Josey scored on a 24-yard run in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin.
 
UMHB rolled up 530 yards of total offense with 324 of those coming on the ground. Sul Ross State managed just 163 total yards on 64 offensive plays and turned the ball over twice.
 
Anderson was 10-of-16 passing for 167 yards and two touchdowns and he added 56 rushing yards and a score. Thompson posted his first career 100-yard rushing day with 114 yards and three touchdowns on 21 totes. Wimby caught six passes for 56 yards and Runnels had three grabs for 87. Freshman defensive back Jaedon Johnson had six tackles and Trey Thedford, junior linebacker Justin Richter and sophomore defensive end Teidrick Smith each had two sacks for the Cru defense.
 
No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor has now won 49 consecutive regular season games and 33 straight ASC contests. UMHB will return to action with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Louisiana College next Saturday at Crusader Stadium.
 
 
No. 18 Texas Lutheran 55, East Texas Baptist 49 - Box Score
SEGUIN, Texas – It came down to the fourth quarter between two teams battling for respect as No. 18 Texas Lutheran held off East Texas Baptist in a high-scoring shootout (55-49). 
 
For the third time this season ETBU racked up more than 600 yards of total offense as the Tigers finished with 676 yards with 426 yards coming in the air from junior quarterback Josh Warbington. Texas Lutheran finished with 601 yards on offense with 351 yards rushing.
 
Senior running back Kendall Roberson, senior wide receiver Stephen Alfred, and junior wide receiver Tyler Bates all had career highs. Roberson finished with 20 carries for 172 yards rushing while Alfred had seven catches for 165 yards. Bates also came away with a career-high receiving with 137 yards in the air. Warbington went 22-of-37 for 426 yards passing and four touchdowns.
 
Defensively, junior linebacker Steven Segler had a career game with two interceptions and had 12 tackles.
 
The first half belonged to ETBU as they had a 24-14 advantage heading into the locker room. ETBU had scores from Alfred on a 41-yard pass from Warbington to tie the game at seven in the first quarter. Warbington ran in for the second touchdown of the night and Bates caught a 20-yard pass for the Tigers' third first half touchdowns. Freshman kicker/punter Ryan Travis hit a 36-yard field goal to end the first half as ETBU held onto a 10-point lead, 24-14.
 
Both teams battled in the third quarter as TLU had 21 points to ETBU’s 19 as the Tigers held a 43-35 lead going into the fourth quarter. Travis hit his second field goal of the night from 31-yards out and then sophomore running back Jourdan McNeill scampered for a 17-yard touchdown putting ETBU up, 35-21. Bates finished out the ETBU scoring in the third quarter making it 43-28 on an eight-yard pass from Warbington. Texas Lutheran took the lead for good in the fourth quarter and held ETBU almost scoreless before Alfred caught a seven-yard pass with 18 seconds left in the game.
 
East Texas Baptist will host Howard Payne Saturday in their homecoming game starting at 6:00 p.m.
