RICHARDSON, Texas –– Mary Hardin-Baylor has been predicted to win its ninth straight American Southwest Conference football title in 2013 after a vote of the league’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members, the ASC office announced on Tuesday (August 6). Earning preseason player of the year honors were Louisiana College’s Ryan Montague and Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Silvio Diaz and Chad Peevey – all seniors.

Mary Hardin-Baylor, which went 13-1 overall (7-0 in ASC) and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division III playoffs last season, totaled 146 points and all but one of the 21 possible first-place votes in the annual preseason poll. Head coach Pete Fredenburg’s Cru has won at least a share of the conference title in 10 of the last 11 seasons, going 86-4 over that time in ASC games. UMHB has also won at least one playoff game in each of the past nine years, advancing as far as the national championship game in 2004.

Seven-time conference champion Hardin-Simmons (6-4, 5-2 ASC) was picked as the conference runner-up with 115 points. Head coach Jesse Burleson’s Cowboys have produced 21 consecutive winnings seasons.

Louisiana College (8-3, 6-1 ASC), which reached the NCAA playoffs for the first time in program history last season, was predicted to finish third with 111 points. Mississippi College (2-8, 1-6 ASC) was the fourth-place pick with 63 points, just two points ahead of East Texas Baptist (3-7, 2-5 ASC). Sul Ross State (5-5, 4-3 ASC) was the selection for sixth place with 90 points and picked up the other first-place vote, followed by Howard Payne (1-9, 1-6 ASC).

Montague (New Orleans, La. / St. Augustine HS), a 5-foot-9, 210-pound running back, was named ASC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after averaging 111 yards per game and scoring 13 touchdowns. He also caught two TD passes.

Diaz (Leander, Texas / LHS), a 6-foot, 260-pound tackle, was named ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after totaling 58 tackles and 11 sacks for the league’s top-rated defense. He also forced and recovered a fumble.

Peevey (Bryan, Texas / St. Joseph’s HS), a 6-foot-3, 190-pound place kicker/punter, was named ASC Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year after making 10 field goals and averaging 41.6 yards per boom. He also notched 76 extra points.

The 2013 season – the 18th in ASC history – begins Sept. 6 when Hardin-Simmons travels to Salem, Ore., to face Willamette. Howard Payne (vs. Trinity), Sul Ross State (at Texas A&M-Commerce), Louisiana College (vs. Belhaven), Mary Hardin-Baylor (at Redlands), and Mississippi College (vs. Millsaps) have their opener on Sept. 7.
