RICHARDSON, Texas –– Texas-Dallas senior Rachel Houston and Texas Lutheran freshman Sofia Vega have been named most valuable players in their respective divisions to highlight the 2013 American Southwest Conference women’s tennis awards as voted on by the league’s head coaches, the ASC office announced on Friday (May 3).

Houston (Plano, Texas / Plano Senior HS) earned the title of East Division Most Valuable Player after going 13-3 in singles play, including a perfect run playing No. 3 singles against division opponents. Her play also helped the Comets to their first conference and division championships.

Vega (Corpus Christi, Texas / Flour Bluff HS) earned the title of West Division Most Valuable Player after going 16-1 at No. 1 singles, including a perfect 5-0 run through division play. Her performance also helped the Bulldogs to their first ASC tournament appearance since 2006.

Houston and Vega were also named to the prestigious ASC All-Conference Team and landed on their respective division’s First Team. Houston was also a part of the all-conference and all-division No. 1 doubles team with partner Casey Johnson. Vega and teammate Caitlin Zarr landed on their division’s second-team No. 2 doubles spot.

Also appearing on the ASC All-Conference Team in singles were Texas-Dallas’ Auvi Tran (No. 2) and Mindy Tiu (No. 4); and Texas-Tyler’s Haley Albro (No. 5) and Emily Evans (No. 6).
