RICHARDSON, Texas –– Hardin-Simmons and Texas-Dallas have been predicted to win 2012 American Southwest Conference volleyball division titles, it was announced by the league office on Monday (Aug. 20) after a vote of each division’s head coaches and sports information directors. Hardin-Simmons’ Madison Reyes and Christine Sas, Texas-Dallas’ Dana Hilzendager and Texas-Tyler’s Emily Wood earned preseason player of the year honors.

Two-time defending conference champion Hardin-Simmons (29-6, 15-3 ASC) was picked to win the ASC West Division title with 71 points and 11 of the possible 12 first-place votes in the annual poll. Head coach Sabrina Bingham’s Cowgirls led the league with 12.81 kills per set in 2011. HSU, which has won four division crowns in the last seven seasons, also hoisted the conference trophy in 2006.

Two-time league champion Texas Lutheran (15-17, 11-7 ASC) was the second-place pick in the West Division with 60 points and the remaining first-place vote. Concordia Texas (13-17, 9-9 ASC) received 46 points to round out what would be the division’s three teams to qualify for the ASC Championship Tournament. Schreiner (32 pts.) was picked to finish fourth, followed by Howard Payne (29 pts.) and Sul Ross State (14 pts.).

Two-time ASC champion Texas-Dallas (24-8, 15-2 ASC) was predicted to take home its seventh straight East Division title with 70 points and 11 of the possible 12 first-place votes. Head coach Marci Sanders’ Comets led the league with 2.46 blocks per set in 2011. UTD has compiled a 92-10 record in division play over the last six seasons.

Texas-Tyler (20-12, 11-6 ASC) was the second-place pick in the East Division with 53 points and the remaining first-place vote. Mary Hardin-Baylor (21-10, 13-4 ASC) received just one less point than UT Tyler to round out what would be the division’s three teams to make the conference tournament. Three-time ASC champion East Texas Baptist was fourth with 37 points, followed by Mississippi College (26 pts.) and LeTourneau (14 pts.).

Reyes (Abilene, TX / AHS), a 5-8 senior outside hitter, earned the title of ASC West Division Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. She earned league Most Valuable Player honors last season after leading the ASC with 3.84 kills per set and adding 45 service aces. Reyes also took conference tournament MVP honors.

Sas (Cedar Park, Texas / Vista Ridge HS), a 5-8 junior outside hitter, was named ASC West Division Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. She averaged 3.77 digs to go along with 2.84 kills per set and led the league with 58 service aces.

Hilzendager (Red Oak, TX / ROHS), a 5-9 senior outside hitter, earned the title of ASC East Division Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. She averaged 3.12 kills per set, totaled 79 blocks and served up 38 aces.

Wood (Waller, Texas / WHS) a 5-4 sophomore libero, was named ASC East Division Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. She led the conference with 6.27 digs per set – over one more per set than anyone else.

Reyes, Sas and Hilzendager were first-team all-conference selections last year, while Wood was a third-team honoree.

The 2012 ASC season – the 17th in league history – begins as early as Aug. 31. The six-team, double-elimination ASC tournament is slated for Nov. 1-3 at the site of the West Division champion and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship will be on the line.

NOTES: The only new head coach in the conference is Schreiner’s Howard Wallace. . . . Former league member McMurry finished 28-4 overall and won the West Division with a 16-2 mark last season, while fellow ex-ASC institution Centenary went 12-14 overall but did not have an East Division record due to going through the NCAA Division III reclassifying process . . . . Hardin-Simmons is receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll for the first time in program history. . . .  The ASC Dig Pink Crossover Challenge weekends are set for Sept. 21-22 in Austin, Texas (Concordia Texas) and Alpine, Texas (Sul Ross State); and Oct. 5-6 in Belton, Texas (Mary Hardin-Baylor) and Richardson, Texas (Texas-Dallas). . . .
