RICHARDSON, Texas –– Texas-Dallas junior Matt Davis and Hardin-Simmons sophomore Erich Bein have been named division most valuable players to highlight the 2012 American Southwest Conference men’s tennis awards as voted on by the league’s head coaches, the ASC office announced on Friday (May 4).
Davis (Victoria, BC, Canada / Weber State) earned the title of East Division Most Valuable Player after going 10-1 in No. 1 singles – including a perfect 5-0 run through division opponents. Davis, who teamed with Bryan Leib for a 3-0 division record in No. 1 doubles, also helped the Comets reach the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Bein (Abilene, TX / AHS) earned the title of West Division Most Valuable Player after going 11-4 in No. 1 singles – including a perfect 6-0 mark against division opponents. Bein, who teamed with Sean Strehlow for an 11-6 mark in No. 1 doubles, also helped lead the Cowboys to a division crown.
Davis and Bein were also named to their respective division’s First Team. Davis was the ASC All-Conference selection at No. 1 singles and a second team East Division pick at No. 1 doubles with teammate Bryan Leib. Davis also doubled as the East’s newcomer of the year. Bein was a second team West Division selection at No. 1 doubles with Strehlow.
Also appearing on the ASC All-Conference Team in singles were Texas-Tyler’s Kevin Singer (No. 2), Edward Timponi (No. 4) and Rob Hodous (No. 6); and Mississippi College’s Jacob Womack (No. 3) and Matthew Martin (No. 5). In doubles, Texas-Tyler’s Singer and Ryan Spencer (No. 1) were honored as well as Mississippi College’s Womack and Matt Whiteside (No. 2) and Martin and Dudley Lampton (No. 3).Texas-Tyler’s Kevin Wright, Doug Kierstead and Joey Hendrie were at-large selections as members of the ASC champion team.
Martin, Hodous and Ozarks’ Bishop Bass shared top freshman honors in the East, while McMurry’s Casjen Rico took the award in the West. Wright, a senior, and East Texas Baptist senior Anthony Williamson shared the sportsmanship athlete of the year honor in the East, while Mary Hardin-Baylor senior Josh Pownall was awarded in the West. Texas-Tyler’s Chris Bizot (East), who guided league and division crowns, and Shane Williford (West), who also guided a division crown, took top coaching honors.
