RICHARDSON, Texas –– Graduating student-athletes from each of the 16 American Southwest Conference member institutions have been named as recipients of the 2011-12 ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor Award on their respective campuses, the ASC office announced on Wednesday (May 23).

The ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor Award is presented to one male and one female member of the graduating class who has compiled the most outstanding record in academics, athletics and leadership over their collegiate career. The award is presented annually by the Faculty Athletics Representative at each conference member institution.

Recipients of the ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor Award winners represent nine different conference sports and include individuals who graduated with academic honors or hold admissions to graduate-level programs; are members of academic honor societies and campus organizations; competed on national, conference or division title teams; earned ASC All-Academic, Distinguished Scholar-Athlete, All-Conference or All-Division honors; and who served as volunteers, tutors and teachers within their campus, community and church groups.

Collin Janssen, who transferred to Concordia last year as a junior, has been a two-year captain and letterwinner for the school's baseball team and holds the biggest leadership position on the squad as the starting catcher ... His efforts both on and off the field are a major reason why the team won the American Southwest Conference championship each year he has been on the roster in 2011 and 2012, which includes earning a top seed in the NCAA West Regional … Janssen, who has won outright or shared the ASC West Division Player of the Year award twice and was a 2012 All-West Region First Team selection, had a 3.76 GPA this past semester while the team was in season … His leadership has also helped the squad be ranked as high as fourth in the nation this spring ... Janssen was named the 2012 ASC West Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year and a major reason why Concordia was the ASC West Division Sportsmanship Team of the Year … The coaching staff awarded the catcher one of the team's two intangible MVP awards for everything he brings to the ballclub at the annual athletics banquet.

Lauren Browning, who was named the American Southwest Conference Women’s Soccer Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was a four-year letterwinner and starting defender graduated as the program’s record holder for matches played as a member of the winningest class in school history … She came into a program that had never won more than four games in a season and helped the team set a school record for victories in each of her last three years, winning five matches as a sophomore, 10 as a junior and 14 as a senior … She has been the team leader on defense all four years and helped the squad set single-season school records for shutouts (11) and longest shutout streak (726:29) in 2011 … Browning was an ASC postseason award winner three times, which was capped by being named to the All-ASC First Team as well as the ASC All-Tournament Team this past fall … She also became the first soccer player in school history – male or female – to be named NSCAA All-Region … Academically, Browning had a perfect 4.0 GPA during the 2011 fall semester and 2012 spring semester of her senior year to graduate with a 3.83 cumulative GPA.

Jordan, a marketing major with a 3.76 GPA, is a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree. Last season, he batted 308, his career batting average was 322. He is the HPU career leader in triples with 18. He has started in 125 of his 131 games. In 2011, Jordan was honored as a member of the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team. He also was second team All-ASC West Division, and was an Honorable Mention selection after his freshman season. He is a member of the Sigma Beta Delta (Business Honor Society). He was the recipient of the Outstanding Student in Entrepreneurship from HPU’s School of Business and Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities.

Tamika Heline

Tamika, a Finance major with a 3.83 GPA, is a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree. During her 4 year career at HPU, she finished second in the HPU record books for kills (1345), kills per game (3.26), service aces (151), digs (1294) and games played (412). She is only the second player in HPU history to exceed 1000 kills and 1000 digs. She was ASC West Division Freshman of the Year, a two-time 1st team All West Division, and a two-time 2nd team All West Division selection. She is a member of Sigma Beta Delta(Business Honor Society).

LETOURNEAU UNIVERSITY
Carlos Cantu

Summary of Collegiate Academic, Leadership, Athletic Accomplishments:
Cantu, a member of the men's tennis team, has compiled a 27-11 record over the last two seasons as a member of the YellowJackets squad. He went 15-5 as LeTourneau's flight one singles player in 2012, and also teamed with Josh Bailey to go 12-6 in flight one doubles competition. Cantu was also earned ASC East Division Player of the Week honors during the season, and earned all-East Honorable Mention at season's end. Off the court, Cantu graduated with a 3.81 GPA with a degree in business administration. He is active in the LeTourneau community and the LETU Athletics community, as he is also a student worker in the LETU sports information department.

Nicole Tammelin
Major: Kinesiology

Hometown: Vestal, N.Y.
Summary of Collegiate Academic, Leadership, Athletic Accomplishments:
An active leader on the field and in the campus community, Tammelin is a four-year letterwinner for the women’s soccer team. She was a three-year starter as a goalie before moving to the field in 2012 due to a lingering hip injury. Prior to making the switch, Tammelin established herself as one of the top goalkeepers in the history of LeTourneau’s women’s soccer; she ranks second in school history in both wins and goals-against average. She was a two-time nominee to the American Southwest Conference’s All-Academic Honor Roll for women’s soccer in 2010 and 2011.

Ben Feibel

Three-time Academic All-Conference performer and multiple-time All-Conference performer. Feibel is on his way to med-school at LSU-Shreveport. He has served as a tutor for both his teammates and other classmates. He has played a role in LC’s nursing home ministry and has remained active in the local faith community. On the field, Ben started 39 of 40 possible games at center and completed his career with no sacks allowed.
 
Devan Greene
Major: Biology

Greene was one of just two seniors on an overachieving LC team. Best defensive player on the squad. Among top three offensive producers in batting average, hits, doubles and RBI. A four-year starter, she balanced her final year with seeking and gaining acceptance to LSU-Shreveport Health Sciences Center graduate program where she has already begun pursuing an advanced degree in Physical Therapy. Graduated with a 3.85 GPA in Biology (among the toughest programs at Louisiana College). Also a member of the ASC Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and a three-time Academic All-Conference performer in addition to several All-ASC East Division honors.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR

Andy Evans

Andy was a four-year letterman for the Cru baseball team and has been one of the top left-handed relievers in each of those seasons. He was also a spot starter and played for a pair of ASC Tournament qualifiers. Andy was a three-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection and a four-time member of the UMHB Vice-President for Athletics Honor Roll. He has also been active in community and campus service throughout his career.
 
Jasmine Austin

Jasmine was a four-year letter-winner for the Cru volleyball team and helped lead UMHB to a school single-season record for victories this year. She has the highest GPA in the Cru athletic department, is a three-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection and a four-time member of the UMHB Vice-President for Athletics Honor Roll. Jasmine has participated in numerous community and campus service projects during her career at UMHB.

Matt Thompson

Thompson was a four-year letter-winner and led McMurry to the ASC tournament each season. In 2012, he batted .404 with 43 runs, 36 RBI and 25 extra-base hits. Of the 12 major offensive categories, he ranked in the top five in 10 of them and led the ASC in home runs (9), on-base average (.518) and slugging percentage (.705). Thompson also had a.991 fielding percentage, committing four errors in 428 total chances. Thompson earned the ASC West Division's “Player of the Week” award four times during the year.
 
Alaisha Guerra

Summary of Collegiate Academic, Leadership, Athletic Accomplishments:
Guerra was a four-year letter winner. She earned 2011 Division III All-Academic Cross Country status from USTFCCCA for the 2011 season and she was an American Southwest Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and ASC All-Academic team member. Guerra placed 22nd at the NCAA South/Southeast Region meet to earn All-Region honors for the second consecutive season. She was also the ASC women's cross country champion.
 
MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE
 
Ben Cross

Summary of Collegiate Academic, Leadership, Athletic Accomplishments:
Ben Cross is a member of Who’s Who Among American University and College Students, the Mississippi College President’s List, the Mississippi College Dean’s List, and the 2011 ASC Distinguished Scholar Athlete Team. Ben recently received Mississippi College’s First Annual, Dr. Charles Davis Christian Service M’Club Award. He has been described by his coach as, “one of the most influential leaders in the soccer program that has ever played. The program will miss his leadership on the field, but more importantly will miss his leadership and ability to inspire other players through his faith and walk with Christ”. Ben has also been a four year FCA Leadership team member as well as serving in the same capacity at the First Baptist Church of Jackson Mississippi. He has been actively involved in summer missions, has led his team in Bible studies throughout the year and serves as a Disciple Now leader. Ben has been a four year starter and two year team captain, ASC All Conference (2010, 2011), ASC All Tournament Team (2010), NSCAA All West Region Team (2011), Team MVP Award (2010, 2011), Team Most Improved Freshman Award, Team Senior of the Year Award.
 
Hannah Langley
Major: Psychology

Hometown: Madison, Miss.
Summary of Collegiate Academic, Leadership, Athletic Accomplishments:
Hannah is a member of Who’s Who Among American University and College Students, the Mississippi College Dean’s List, Psi Chi Honor Society, the ASC All Academic Team (2009-2011), the ASC Distinguished Scholar Athlete Team (2011), and the Mississippi College Alpha Chi Scholar Athlete of the Year. Hannah Langley has been actively involved in Laguna Social Tribe (held office for one year), served on the FCA Campus Leadership Team, studied in the Spain Study Abroad summer program, Pinelake Baptist Church Worship Team, served with the MC Scout “Admissions Team” (2009-2010), Mississippi College Orientation Leader (2009, 2010), Campus Housing Resident Assistant (2010-11). Hannah also entered research into the Tougaloo College/Mississippi College Research Symposium and won the “Phillip Russell” Memorial Award for best poster presentation. Hannah has squeezed everything she could out of her four year career at Mississippi College both on and off the soccer field. She has been a staple on our campus in many areas and will be greatly missed. Hannah was a four year starter and three year team captain, received the teams “Amber Busin” Courage Award, ASC Defensive Freshman of the Year (2008), ASC All Conference (2008, 2009, 2011), ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year (2011).

UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS

Jeremy Provence
Major: Physical Education
Sport: Cross Country
Hometown: Mountainburg, Ark.
Summary of Collegiate Academic, Leadership, Athletic Accomplishments:
Jeremy Provence produced the 8K school record, the top time among ASC runners at the NCAA III Regional, finished second at the ASC Championships and was named ASC runner of the week twice during the 2011 season. He helped Ozarks to its best finish at the NCAA III regional (top-10) and he just missed qualifying for the NCAA III national race by two spots in the November race. Provence posted a pair of individual wins during the year, while helping Ozarks finish second at the ASC championships. Provence capped his senior year by receiving All-Region honors and First Team All-Conference honors. In the classroom, he was a three-time ASC All-Academic honoree, member of the Dean’s List and the ASC’s Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for cross country.
 
April Young

Summary of Collegiate Academic, Leadership, Athletic Accomplishments:
April Young has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average in seven of her eight semesters of college. She capped her senior season by receiving Capital One Academic All-America Second Team honors, making her the only ASC women’s basketball player to make the national team. Young earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team her sophomore season and was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District Team her junior and senior year. A three-time All-Conference performer, Young was the conference leader in three-point shots per game (2.4), while ranking tenth in scoring (14.0) during the 2011-12 season. She set the school record in career three-pointers (190) and has scored 1,152 career points. She was named ASC Player of the Week once this season. Young is a three-time member of the ASC All-Academic Team and was the ASC’s Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for women’s basketball last season.

Andy Silcox

Andy was a two year member of the Lobo baseball team after transferring from Pima Community College. He played left field and had a batting average of .271 with a fielding percentage of .980. He participated in the 2011 “Buddy Walk” for Down’s Syndrome and help collect funds for the Big Bend Special Olympics.
 
Samantha Baker

Summary of Collegiate Academic, Leadership, Athletic Accomplishments:
Samantha was a two year member of the Lady Lobo basketball team after transferring from University of the Southwest.   She was team captain and a recipient of the Curtis Bozarth Leadership Award for women’s basketball. She averaged 3.3 points per game and had a rebound average of 1.6 per game. She plans to graduate next December with a major in mathematics and a minor in education.   As a member of the basketball team she helped give presentations to elementary school children on tobacco awareness as well as helped in the collection of funds that was contributed to the Big Bend Special Olympics.

Almendariz concluded his career as a Patriot by helping lead the UT Tyler men’s soccer team to the national quarterfinals. A two-time First Team All-American Southwest Conference honoree, Almendariz has also been selected as a member of the All-West Region Team. For the 2012 season, he was named to the First Team All-America.

Summary of Collegiate Academic, Leadership, Athletic Accomplishments:
Thomas was selected at UT Tyler’s Female Athlete of the Year for 2011-12. During her career as a Patriot, Thomas twice overcame serious injuries and surgery to grab the school records for most points, three-pointers made and games started. She served as team captain her junior and senior years. As a graduate student earning her MBA, Thomas continued playing for the Patriots while working full-time as an accountant.
