Video Interviews: UT Tyler's Jacob Walsh & Matt Stephens
LUFKIN, TX -- Teammates Jacob Walsh, John Dukes and Trent Boudin carded the top three individual spots, respectively, to lead Texas-Tyler to a 29-stroke lead after first day of the 2012 American Southwest Conference Golf Championship on Monday at par-72 Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin, Texas.
Walsh, the senior defending champion, fired a 71-75--146 and holds a two-stroke lead over Dukes (74-74) and four-stroke advantage over Trent Boudoin (77-73). UT Tyler's Matt Stevens rebounded from a first-round 83 and posted a 73. He and Joey Rippel (78-78) are at 156 and each in the top 10.
As a team, Texas-Tyler posted tourney-lows of 300 and 295 for a 595 total. Mary Hardin-Baylor, led by Robby Schimmels' 77-75--152 which has him in fourth place individually, is in second place with a 316-308-624. LeTourneau (312-318--630) got a 75-78 from Jacob Clay and is in third place entering Tuesday's final 18 holes.
Texas-Dallas (322-310--632) is fourth, followed by Schreiner (318-319--637), Concordia Texas (320-321--641), Louisiana College (330-332--662), defending champion Texas Lutheran (327-337--664) and Hardin-Simmons (340-334--674).
Playing as individuals, McMurr'y's Garrett Betts had a 74-85--159 to sit in the top 15, while Mississippi College's got a 161 from Ethan Doan (83-78) and 163 from Griffin Burk (84-79)
The ASC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships, to be held May 15-18 at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
