RICHARDSON, Texas –– Hardin-Simmons senior guard Matt Addison and Texas-Dallas senior forward Chris Barnes have been named division players of the year to headline the 2012 American Southwest Conference Men’s Basketball All-Conference and All-Division selections, the ASC office announced on Thursday (March 1), following a vote of the league’s head coaches.

The 5-8, 172-pound Addison (Killeen, TX / Harker Heights HS) earned the title of ASC West Division Player of the Year after averaging a league-high 28.6 points per game. His 744 total points set the conference’s single-season record. Addison also averaged 4.7 assists and a conference-best 2.5 steals per game. He also led the ASC with an 87.9 free throw percentage.

The 6-6, 210-pound Barnes (San Antonio, TX / Churchill HS) earned the title of ASC East Division Player of the Year for the second straight season. He averaged 15.6 points and six rebounds per game. Barnes also knocked down 54 three-point shots and recorded 21 blocks in leading the Comets to their fourth straight division title.

Addison and Barnes, who were both selected to their respective All-Division first team, were also named to the prestigious five-player ASC All-Conference Team. They were joined by senior guard Marlon Miller (Belton, TX / Temple College) of Mary Hardin-Baylor, senior forward Jeremy LaGarde (New Orleans, LA / Arkansas-Monticello) of East Texas Baptist and sophomore forward Kyle Schleigh (Houston, TX / Kingwood HS) of Texas-Dallas.

Mary Hardin-Baylor junior guard Brian Todd (Pflugerville, TX / PHS) was voted ASC West Division Defensive Player of the Year after spearheading a unit that allowed a division-low 65.9 points per game. Howard Payne guard Brandon Gould (Fort Worth, TX / Southwest HS) took freshman of the year honors in the West after averaging 11.8 points and 3.4 assists per game, while Schreiner center Travis Pflughaupt (El Campo, TX / ECHS) was the top newcomer after averaging 17.2 points and a league-high 10.5 rebounds. Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore guard James Allen (The Woodlands, TX / College Park HS) and McMurry senior point guard Jaden Isler (Clovis, NM / Jacksonville) shared the title of ASC West Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Ken DeWeese earned West coach of the year honors after guiding a division crown, program-record 24-1 mark in the regular season and top-5 national ranking.

Texas-Dallas senior guard Greg Chiasson (Austin, TX / Westwood HS) was named ASC East Division Defensive Player of the Year after leading a group that allowed a league-low 63 points per game. Texas-Dallas guard Matthew Medell (San Antonio, TX / Reagan HS) was named the top freshman in the East after averaging 7.6 points in conference play, while Ozarks junior forward Ronnie Dodd (Forney, TX / Eastfield JC) took top newcomer honors after averaging 15 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Louisiana College senior forward Korey Salmon (Deville, LA / Buckeye HS) was voted ASC East Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. Texas-Dallas’ Terry Butterfield took coach of the year honors for the fourth straight year after guiding an East title that included sweeping all division opponents and closing the regular season with a program-record 12-game winning streak.
