Sul Ross State, Hardin-Simmons, and nationally-ranked teams Mary Hardin-Baylor and Louisiana College recorded wins during Week 6 of American Southwest Conference football on Saturday (Oct. 6). It was the first league win in two tries for SRSU this season, while HSU, UMHB and LC improved to 2-0 in conference play. SRSU’s 75 points scored was just eight off the conference record set by Hardin-Simmons against Texas Lutheran back on Oct. 31, 1998.

Sul Ross State 75, Mississippi College 42

CLINTON, Miss. – Dominique Carson set a new Sul Ross school record after scoring 5 touchdowns as the Lobos defeated Mississippi College 75-42 Saturday evening earning them their second win on the season.
Carson had 209 yards rushing with 4 touchdowns and 149 yards receiving with one touchdown as Sul Ross's offense produced 787 total yards. Quarterback A.J. Springer was 22 of 31 for 432 yards and 6 touchdowns with no interceptions. Lee Carothers had his first 100-yard game of the season after gaining 104 yards on 6 receptions and scored two touchdowns.
Sul Ross struck early and took a 14-0 lead after Carson scored on 2 and 25-yard runs with 10:30 left in the first quarter. The Choctaws would then score on their second drive to get on the board cutting the lead to 14-7 with 7:30 on the clock. The Lobos then scored on their next two drives. A 5-yard by Alex Lovan and then after the Lobos' defense forced an interception, Springer connected with Jeff Peterson for a 36-yard strike that put Sul Ross ahead 28-7 with 2:23 left in the quarter. MC would cut the margin to 28-14 after the Choctaws scored with 1:01 to play.
In the second quarter, the Lobos improved their lead to 35-14 after a 1-yard run by Carson with 12:16 to play in the half. MC would then answer and make it 35-21 with 11:15 remaining. Later in the quarter, Sul Ross moved ahead 42-21 after another 1-yard run by Carson with 3:07 left in the half. The Lobos' defense would then force another interception on MC's following drive. Sul Ross capitalized on the turnover and took a 49-21 lead into halftime after Springer found Lee Carothers for a 13-yard score.
The third quarter would see the teams trading points. As he had in the previous two quarters, Carson scored the first points of the third quarter when he caught a 56-yard pass from Springer that gave the Lobos a 56-21 lead with 12:14 left in the quarter. The Choctaws then scored to make a 56-28 game with 5:32 left in the quarter. On the Lobos' following drive, Springer would find Carothers again for a 39-yard score that put Sul Ross ahead 63-28 with 4:47 on the clock. Mississippi College then scored on their drives as the third quarted ended with the Lobos leading 63-42.
In the fourth quarter, Sul Ross's defense shoutout the Choctaws. But the Lobos' offense wasn't finished. Springer connected twice with Cordrick Mobley for scores of 5-yards and 18-yards that gave Sul Ross a 75-42 victory.
In addition to Carson, Springer finished with 77 yards rushing on 12 carries, while Alex Lovan had 41 yards on 6 carries. Calvon Henderson had 4 receptions for 80 yards and Cordrick Mobley finished with 4 receptions for 34 yards.
Defensively, Johnny Stewart and Casey Sonier each had 7 tackles to lead the team. Stewart also had a forced fumble. Sonier, Job Mason, Mel Haro each had an interception as the Lobos totaled four turnovers.
The Lobos are now 2-3 (1-1 ASC) on the season and will travel to Seguin, TX to face Texas Lutheran University on October 13th.
Hardin-Simmons 56, Howard Payne 10

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Hardin-Simmons scored 42 unanswered points en route to a 56-10 win over Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.
Howard Payne used a ball control offense and a couple of miscues on HSU's special team's units in the first half to control the ball for 24:03 in the first half, but HSU still led at halftime 14-7.
In the second half, the Cowboys opened up the passing attack and thwarted any upset attempt by the Yellowjackets.
The Yellowjackets took the opening kickoff and drove it methodically to their own 48 when HSU forced a punt, but HPU executed a perfect fake for a 24-yard gain and continued the drive all the way to the Cowboy three yard line when
Jonathan Petty recovered a fumble to stall the drive that went 13-plays and 60 yards and took 7:58 off the clock.
HSU then went three and out and HPU again drove the field and this time scored on a Zach Dove 7-yard run with 13:53 to play in the half. The drive was extended when the Cowboys' roughed the punter on a block attempt.
The Cowboys then kicked it up a notch in rhythm and went 71 yards in seven plays as
Logan Turner hit
Trei Lewis for an 8-yard touchdown pass. HPU then went on another time consuming drive that went 11 plays and took 5:09 off the clock, but the Cowboys forced a punt.
On the first play of the next possession Turner found
Jimmie Simpson over the middle he then made a move turned on the accelerator and went 87 yards to the end zone to make 14-7 with 5:57 to play in the half.
The Cowboys took the ball first in the third quarter and went 61 yards in five plays.
Tevin Mitchell capped the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run and it was setup by a 45-yard catch and run by
Corey Jones.
HSU forced a quick punt and then went 71 yards in 11 plays as Mitchell capped the drive with a 1-yard run. HSU forced another punt, but Simpson fumbled the punt back to HPU and the Jackets moved it to the HSU 4-yard line, but
Undra Hendrix forced a fumble and
James Place recovered it.
On the first play of the fourth quarter Turner hit Simpson on a 48-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-7. HSU forced a punt on the next HPU drive and HSU went 65 yards in 12 plays.
Devin Carver eight straight plays in the drive and Turner capped it with a 10-yard pass touchdown to
Colton Brewer.
After HPU added a 30-yard field goal,
Josh Christian hit
Garret Avalos over the middle and he outraced the defense 71 yards to the end zone to make the score 49-10.
Jay Wise capped the scoring for the Cowboys as he intercepted a pass and went 79 yards up the sideline for a touchdown. It was his 10th career interception which moved him to a tie for fourth all-time at HSU.
The Cowboys ended the day with 571 yards of total offense on just 58 plays (9.8 yards per play) and all but nine of those yards came in the final three quarters of play.
Turner completed 23-of-32 passes for 393 yards and four touchdowns and Christian completed his only pass for a 71-yard touchdown, the first of his career. Simpson caught five passes for 170 yards.
Chad Laughlin led the Cowboy defense with a career-high 15 tackles. HSU also forced four turnovers in the game. Jonathan Petty recorded a sack, an interception and recovered a fumble in the game for HSU.
Thomas Head completed 12-of-21 passes for 180 yards to pace HPU. Josh Eppler had 11 tackles.
HSU has won three straight and is 3-2 on the year and 2-0 in ASC action. HPU fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in conference and saw its losing streak reach 12 games. The Cowboys play East Texas Baptist at 1:30 on Saturday as part of homecoming festivities.
No. 2/2 Mary Hardin-Baylor 49, Texas Lutheran 31

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team dominated the first three quarters as the #2-ranked Cru rolled to a 49-31 victory over Texas Lutheran University Saturday night in Belton. UMHB jumped out to a 42-7 lead on the way to improving to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the ASC on the year.
The Cru scored on its opening possession when
Michael Carpenter broke off a 52-yard scoring run to make it 7-0 just 1:16 into the game. Carpenter added a 19-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 14-0 with 9:00 remaining in the first quarter. Brent Peavy's eight-yard scoring scamper cut it to 14-7 just 1:09 later, but
LiDarral Bailey broke off a 29-yard scoring run of his own to give UMHB a 12-7 edge at the end of the first quarter.
It would stay 21-7 into the second half before
Elijah Hudson's 29-yard TD run made it 28-7 early in the third quarter. Bailey added a 14-yard TD toss to
Geoff Myles before Hudson scored again, this time on a three-yard run to give the Cru a 42-7 advantage six seconds into the fourth quarter. Texas Lutheran would score on Jo Jo Epps' three-yard run and a 77-yard strike from Trenton White to Cameron Peavy after the Cru began to make wholesale substitutions on both sides of the ball.
Brian Gallagher would lead UMHB on a nine-play, 75-yard drive, capped by his one-yard keeper for a score to push the lead to 49-21. TLU would get a 59-yard field goal from Allen Cain and a 14-yard TD pass from White to Collin Bode to cut it to the final margin.
Hudson finished with 140 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for UMHB and Bailey added 101 rushing yards on six carries to go with 218 passing yards and another score. Myles caught eight passes for 148 yards.
Javicz Jones topped the Cru defense with 14 tackles and
Silvio Diaz added 10 stops and posted 2.0 sacks to become UMHB's career leader. Diaz broke Keith Zunker's previous school record of 19.0 by taking his total to 20.0.
White was 7-13 passing for 157 yards and two scores, all of it in the fourth quarter against UMHB reserves. Cameron Peavy caught eight passes for 161 yards and a score. Darnell Bohannon-Bey led the Bulldog defense with 13 tackles.
The Cru rolled up 410 rushing yards and 628 yards of total offense. Texas Lutheran finished with 380 total yards, much of it coming well after the game had been decided. UMHB posted six sacks and intercepted two passes in the victory.
The Cru has now won 29 consecutive regular season games and 21 straight ASC games. UMHB has also won its last 28 regular season home games.
UMHB will now travel to Pineville, Louisiana to take on Louisiana College in an 11:00 AM kickoff next Saturday. The Wildcats are 4-1 overall and 2-0 in ASC play and are ranked in the top 25 in the country in both national polls.

MARSHALL, Texas – A second half surge by #21 Louisiana College pushed the Wildcats to a 29-17 American Southwest win over East Texas Baptist University after the Tigers pulled within three, 13-10, in the third quarter. Louisiana College scored the next nine points to take command of the game, 22-10, as the Tigers played from behind the rest of the half.
East Texas Baptist made it interesting in the fourth quarter when Seth Hubbard sailed a 10-yard pass to Roy Denbow in the end zone to come within five points, 22-17. The Tiger defense then put the pressure on Louisiana College forcing a three-and-out giving the ball to East Texas Baptist in Louisiana College territory. It took the Wildcat defense just three plays to end any threat from East Texas Baptist with a one-yard run, broken up pass, and a sack as the Tigers punted the ball away.
With 5:41 left in the game, East Texas Baptist had one more chance to upset the Wildcats and drove to the Louisiana College 49-yard line. After a rush for no-gain, Hubbard was intercepted at the 25-yard line to end the threat. Louisiana College responded going 75 yards on eight plays to end any Tiger threat of a comeback moving the score to 29-17.
The game started off in East Texas Baptist’s favor as Kwame’ Spikes made it 7-0 with 30 seconds left in the first quarter. Hubbard zipped a pass across the middle to Spikes from eight-yards out for the 7-0 lead. Louisiana College cut into the Tiger’s lead with a field goal at the 6:36 mark in the second quarter and then took the lead, 10-7, with 3:31 left in the half on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jamie Bunting to Kyle Galyon. They extended their lead at the half with a 35-yard field goal with 10 seconds left making it 13-7.
Cory McNeil had a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter with 9:49 to put East Texas Baptist within three, 13-10. Two drives later, Louisiana College’s D’Mario caught a 31-yard pass from Bunting moving the score to 19-10 after missing the extra point.
East Texas Baptist finished with 237 yards of total offense as Hubbard threw for 169 yards and the team ran for 63 but also had 14 penalties for 157 yards. Louisiana College finished with 323 yards offense as they threw for 190 yards.
Roy Denbow and Kwame’ Spikes led East Texas Baptist with one touchdown each as Denbow finished with 49 yards receiving. John Gable averaged 3.9 yards per carry with 70 total yards.
Defensively, Dominque Bailey picked off two Louisiana College passes and Jordan Hayes had two sacks.
