ASC Football Standings
Howard Payne, Texas Lutheran, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Mississippi College all started off their league American Southwest Conference football schedules on the right foot with victories on Saturday (Sept. 17). Eight teams began conference play, but Louisiana College had one final non-conference tune-up and did so by routing Millsaps. After Saturday’s results, all ASC teams have a win in 2011. UMHB and LC remain unbeaten.
Howard Payne 17, Sul Ross State 9: QuarterbackMarcus McAdoo rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown on 21 carriers and passed for another score in Brownwood, Texas, to help the Yellow Jackets snap an eight-game losing streak dating back to last season. HPU (1-2, 1-0 ASC) jumped out to a 17-0 lead at halftime and never looked back. McAdoo helped the fast start by taking the opening play from scrimmage 70 yards for a TD. SRSU (1-2, 0-1 ASC) made it a one-possession contest late in the third quarter with a 20-yard TD pass to Thomas Sanders from Scotty Walden, but the Yellow Jackets’ defense clamped down and denied the Lobos on their final four drives. Tyson Swaner, Demetrius Cody and Tyler Jones had an interception for HPU, while Rober Pyssen had 15 tackles and a pick for SRSU.
Texas Lutheran 44, East Texas Baptist 34: The Bulldogs erased an early 14-point deficit by churning out 23 unanswered points in the second half in Marshall, Texas, and snapped a losing streak on the road that dated back to 2008. TLU (2-1, 1-0 ASC) got 222 yards passing and three touchdowns – all to different receivers – from Mitchell Bunger. Patrick Johnson had a pair of rushing TDs for the Bulldogs during the second-half outburst. ETBU (1-2, 0-1 ASC) was unable to capitalize on the effort of Sed Harris, who threw for 229 yards and three TDs and ran for 150 yards and another score. Al Lewis had eight catches for 152 yards and two of those TDs. Bradley Snowden had 10 tackles for TLU, while Jordan Hayes and Collin Bieschke each had 10 stops for ETBU.
No. 3 Mary Hardin-Baylor 28, McMurry 27: Javicz Jones intercepted a two-point conversion attempt in the end zone with 1:47 to play to allow the nationally-ranked Cru to hang on for a victory in Belton, Texas. UMHB (2-0, 1-0 ASC) built up a 28-6 lead at halftime, but McMurry (1-2, 0-1 ASC) stormed back in the second half with three TDs – two Jake Mullin TD passes and a D.J. Baiza 81-yard interception return – to force the decision to go for the win or not. Darius Wilson ran for 222 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries to pace UMHB, which also got two rushing TDs from QB LiDarral Bailey. Mullin finished 35 of 57 for 288 yards and three TDs with two interceptions. R.J. Long (one TD) and Delfonte Diamond (two TDs) each had nine catches for the War Hawks. Ty Dooley had 10 tackles for UMHB, while Austin Cleere (12 tackles) and Will Morris (11) guided McMurry. The game was delayed for 56 minutes in the second quarter because of lightning.
Mississippi College 45, No. 8 Hardin-Simmons 28: The defense forced five turnovers, Steven Knight ran for 181 yards on 23 carries and the Choctaws eventually pulled away for an upset win in Clinton, Miss. MC (2-1, 1-0 ASC) exploded for 28 straight points between 8:02 in the second quarter and 8:50 in the fourth. Jarred Craine led MC’s defensive unit with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. J.C. Carey and Jeremy Bertrand also recovered fumbles, while Raeon Jones snared an interception. Knight totaled three rushing TDs and also scored on a pass from Tommy Reyer. Nationally-ranked HSU (2-1, 0-1 ASC) could not take advantage of a huge day from Corey Jones, who hauled in 10 catches for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Caleb Christian had nine tackles and two forced fumbles for the Cowboys on defense.
Louisiana College 56, Millsaps 0: The Wildcats racked up 597 yards of offense – thanks to four TD passes from James Bunting – and forced five turnovers to roll to a win in Pineville, La. It was the biggest margin of victory for LC (2-0) since 2000 and first shutout since 2009. Bunting was 21 of 32 for 276 yards and 11 different Wildcats caught passes, including Darnell Williams’ six grabs for 109 yards and a score. Nate Janzen starred on both sides of the ball for LC, scored on a rushing a passing TD, making eight tackles and recording an interception. Richard Logan also had a pick for LC. Millsaps (1-2) was held to 190 yards of offense and just 11 first downs.
