RICHARDSON, Texas -- University of Mary Hardin-Baylor senior football player Max Taylor and Texas Lutheran University senior basketball player Kaitlyn McCanna have been named winners of the 2010-11 American Southwest Conference Community Service Award, the ASC office announced on Tuesday (May 24) after a vote of the league's athletic directors.

The ASC Community Service Award, in its third academic year, honors a male and female student-athlete who best displays leadership and action in fostering community service on their campus and local community. Each ASC member institution may nominate its campus Community Service Award winner to the conference-wide ballot.

Taylor (Lufkin, TX / LHS), a business management major, is spearheaded UMHB's involvement in the Sole 2 Soul campaign to benefit orphans in Haiti for the third straight year. The event has raised more than $4,000 and six boxes of shoes for donation to those orphans over that time. In addition to organizing and publicizing the event, Taylor has literally "walked the walk." Participants in the campaign have gone without shoes on the specified Sole 2 Soul day each of the past three years to help them better understand the plight of those who cannot afford shoes. He went to the UMHB administration to present his idea and was joined by shoeless administrators, professors, staff members and students. He has also volunteered his time with Hope for the Hungry, serves as an elementary school mentor, was a cast member in the school's annual Easter Pageant and participates in UMHB's annual Spring Revival. Taylor was an AFCA Good Works Team nominee and also found time to be voted ASC Offensive Lineman of the Year for his performance on the field as part of the Cru's ASC champion football team.

McCanna (Glendale, AZ / Ironwood HS), a kinesiology major, serves as a mentor of a 6th grade girl at Saegert Sixth Grade Center in Seguin, Texas for three hours per week and organized care packages for troops as part of the Veterans and Society Together (VAST) program. She also helped during TLU's H.O.T DAWG Day of Service in which student-athletes helped others in a day of service. McCanna also is active in the Seguin, Texas, community by participating in senior center yard clean up, window washing, community garden restoration and helping at the abuse center. She also was involved in the Muscular Sclerosis Benefit Bike Ride. As a member of the Lady Bulldogs basketball team, McCanna gardened and groomed a community garden near the university as volunteer project. Other programs McCanna is involved in include: the Blumberg Park Clean Up; Bell Ringer for Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign: Day of the Dawgs; Valentine's Day Cards for Senior Center; Yarn-Doll Project: Lutheran World Relief; Earth Day Community Clean-Up; and Kite-Fest.

Sam organized a softball game that benefited the Alliance for Women and Children of Abilene. He also is extremely active in the campus FCA and helped promote a tri-college chapter with HSU, McMurry and ACU. He also is a member of SAAC and was a big part of HSU raising over $700 for the Fleming family.

John has been described as the embodiment of the LeTourneau student-athlete by men's cross country head coach Michael Lewis. During the fall semester, John was active volunteer at his church in Longview by assisting with the church's Childcare services on Sunday afternoons.

Lya has been actively involved in the CTX and surrounding community for the past 4 years. This year, she has been very involved in the CTX Service Learning group. Throughout the year she has been involved in Imagine Arts, an association that helps and supports disabled artists. She helps in the studio, cooks dinners for them, and helps organize open mic nights. Lya also works with the Church Under the Bridge in downtown Austin. She sets up and serves breakfast to homeless people on Sundays. Throughout the year, Lya helped on two projects for the Texas Ramp Project, building ramps for handicapped people to get into their houses. She was also involved with Water to Thrive, an organization that raises money and awareness for building wells, and providing accessible clean water to villages in Ethiopia. As the SAAC President she also organized a canned food drive for the Capital Area Food Bank, and led the Make A Change effort to raise funds for Special Olympics. She also organized a partnership with Special Olympics Texas. Lya is an unbelievable leader and a committed servant to her community.

ETBU Cares (Fall 2010), "I went to Robert E. Lee elementary school for a couple hours every week and helped the kids with reading and anything else they had to do. Most of the time one or two kids would read to me and talk to me. Organization of ETBU Community Block Party, Fall 2010 "It was a time for all of the community to come together and to build relationships within the community and with ETBU and Second Baptist Church. I helped with setting up and tearing down. We conducted surveys from door to door around the community to find out what needs the people perceived within the community. We also had a lot of activities for the kids like pony rides, bounce houses, and face painting. Member, Crossroads Baptist Church "I have been involved with my church, Crossroads Baptist Church, by helping with events like Disciple Now. This spring during Disciple Now we had a service component where each group took $30 and used it to spread Jesus' love. My group took flowers and cards with verses to the hospital to share with people and pray with them."

Emily is a Junior, three year starter and team captain for the Lady Jackets and as been instrumental in establishing the HPU's placement into the ASC Tournament. Emily is an elementary education major and has a stellar 3.53 GPA. She works as a peer academic tutor in the Collegium here at HPU. She is also a member of KAO sorority Kappa Delta Pi (Education Honors Society).

In addition to establishing herself as one of the most prolific women's cross country runners in school history, Nicole dedicates a substantial amount of time to serving others within and outside the LeTourneau community. She served as her floor's chaplain in her residence hall this year and has already participated in two LeTourneau-sponsored mission trips during her time here. During the 2010 Christmas holiday, Nicole traveled to Hungary as part of a LETU mission trip, where she participated in street ministry and had an opportunity to witness and share personal testimony in a variety of settings.

Thomas, an All-Conference performer at catcher and Academic All-Conference honoree, will graduate from Louisiana College in May. Prior to going into the "real world," she will make a mission trip to Uganda this summer, a trip she is paying for out of pocket with money raised by selling shirts, concessions and other items over the past three months (all while still leading the LC softball team in home runs). In addition to mission work, Thomas also volunteers at the local Goodwill, has worked with the local food bank for two years and worked at a summer camp in Texas since 2009. She makes frequent visits to churches throughout Central and Northern Louisiana as a Disciple Now leader. She has also organized a fundraiser for St. Judes via the collection of Coke tabs and was a an active fundraiser for Louisiana College's SAAG committee in the "Make a Change" program.

Sara serves as the President of the UMHB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has had a hand in many of the department's service projects this school year. She helped lead a department-wide recycling program in which the volleyball team cleaned Gatorade bottles and donated them to "Helping Hands" ministry. The ministry then used those bottles for distributing laundry detergent to needy families throughout the year. Sara also led the UMHB "Make-A-Change-In-14-Days" efforts that raised more than $300 to benefit juvenile diabetes and Hungry Kids campaigns. She was also one of the leader's of the volleyball program's efforts during the "Dig Pink" campaign. Sara attended the NCAA Convention this past year, as well, in an effort to learn ways to become a more effective campus and community leader.

Kasey has spent her four-year career as a vital member of the women's soccer team on and off the field. Ambrose is currently in the process of working alongside an IMB Missionary in Botswana, Africa to organize and start an Orphan Care Center in Lobatse, Botswana after spending the Summer of 2010 in the African nation. Kasey has also spent the last year on the First Baptist Church Jackson Leadership Team, as well as, the Praise and Worship Team. Also at FBCJ, Kasey has led several bible studies and volunteered in the church nursery. Ambrose has spent the last two years working in the MC Tutoring Center. Kasey has also spent her senior year as a Jackson Futbol Club coach for Under-10 and Under-8 girls teams. Kasey is finishing up her senior year and will be student teaching in the fall to finish up her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education.

Kaitlyn Williams has labored numerous hours volunteering in her church, community and campus. Williams most recently served as a chaperone at the Young Christians Weekend in Branson, Missouri, this semester. There, she led Bible studies to young adults. Each summer, she volunteers her time at the Baptist Vista church youth camp, and in the summer of 2010, she went on a week-long mission trip to help the underprivileged in Nicaragua. Williams serves as a Children's leader at her church, where she teaches a class and holds a position of a recreation leader. Within the community, Williams coaches a youth soccer team, volunteers time with the Clarksville Junior auxiliary organization and visits a local nursing home monthly. On campus, Williams has been involved with the Christmas Angel Tree project, Student Foundation Board phone-a-thon, Baptist Campus Ministries, Alpha and Omega, Habitat for Humanity and the Jones Learning Center. A two-time member of the ASC All-Academic Team, Williams is a starter on the women's soccer team and works in the Sports Information Office as a student assistant.

The park was well known for criminal activity and has now been restored for the youth of the community to enjoy. (September 12, 2010) ; Bell Ringer for Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign: Organized student bell ringers for the Salvation Army and also participated as a bell ringer outside of the community Wal-Mart collecting donations. (November 15, 2010) ; Day of the Dawgs: Clean up of community gardens and painted the houses of the physically unable. Set up and tear down of event that was held for the students and community of Texas Lutheran University. (February 7, 2011); Valentine's Day Cards for Senior Center: Organized a table in the student center for students to create Valentine's Day Cards for a Senior center in Seguin, TX. (February 10-13, 2011); Yarn-Doll Project: Created yarn-dolls to give to children of a family violence shelter in Seguin, Texas. Sold various yarn-dolls at Spring Fling to raise money for the violence shelter. (March 3, 2011) ; Lutheran World Relief (LWR DAY): Assisted in packing and organizing boxes coming from various locations around Texas into a big rig for transport to the main facility of distribution. Packages were going to help relief around the world and consisted of blankets, care packages, etc. (April 12, 2011) ; Earth Day Community Clean-Up: Collected trash from the yards of people that couldn't afford or physically take unwanted items to the recycle center/dump or to Goodwill.
