RICHARDSON, Texas –– The Mary Hardin-Baylor women went 6-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play for the first time in program history to earn the right to host the 2011 ASC Tennis Championships on April 29-May 1 at Yvonne Li Tennis Center and Belton High School in Belton, Texas.
The hosting rights of the ASC championships – which features both the men and women – rotates each year. The men’s and women’s ASC champion will each earn the conference’s automatic bids into their respective NCAA Division III Tennis Championships.
For the fourth straight year, live statistics will be available. They can be found on the conference’s website, www.ASCsports.org, and the official championships website, linked to through www.cruathletics.com.
UMHB head coach James Cohagan’s women’s squad used a 5-4 victory over Hardin-Simmons in the regular season finale to earn the division crown and snap an 84 division-match win streak by the Cowgirls that dated back to 1999. The Lady Cru (12-5) also earned a first-round bye in the six-team, single-elimination tournament and on Saturday at 1 p.m. on their home court will play the winner of East No. 2 seed Texas-Dallas (7-6, 4-1 ASC) and West No. 3 seed Sul Ross State (6-3, 4-2 ASC), who square off at 1 p.m. Friday at Belton High School.
Head coach Chris Bizot and three-time defending conference champion Texas-Tyler (11-6, 5-0 ASC), which won its sixth straight ASC East Division title and has carried a national ranking most of the season, will wait until Saturday at 1 p.m. at Belton High School to get Friday’s 1 p.m. winner at Yvonne Li Tennis Center between West No. 2 seed Hardin-Simmons (11-7, 5-1 ASC) and East No. 3 seed Mississippi College (7-10, 4-1 ASC).
On the men side, Hardin-Simmons and Texas-Tyler – who have combined for the last 10 ASC titles – wrapped up their respective division’s top seeds with perfect marks and also received first-round byes in the six-team, single-elimination event. They will each wait for semifinal action on Saturday.
Head coach Shane Williford’s 10-time West Division champion Cowboys used a 5-4 win over cross-town rival McMurry in the season finale to capture the division crown. HSU (10-8, 5-0 ASC) will get underway at 9 a.m. at Yvonne Li Tennis Center against the winner of Friday’s 9 a.m. quarterfinal on the same court between East No. 2 seed Mississippi College (12-5, 4-1 ASC) and West No. 3 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor (8-6, 4-2 ASC).
On Saturday at 9 a.m. at Belton High School, Bizot’s three-time defending conference champion and nationally-ranked Patriots (16-6, 5-0 ASC) will face the victor of Friday’s 9 a.m. match also at BHS between West No. 2 seed McMurry (18-3, 5-1 ASC) and East No. 3 seed Texas-Dallas (10-4, 3-2 ASC).
Both the men’s and women’s semifinal winners will face off for the titles on Sunday at Yvonne Li. The men will start at 1 p.m. and the women will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of that match.
