CLEVELAND --- Five American Southwest Conference members earned spots in the final Fall 2011-12 Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings released by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Rankings for the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup are based on an insitution's NCAA Championships finish in up to 18 sports -- nine men's and nine women's -- over the course of the academic year. The fall 2011-12 rankings included men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, football, volleyball and field hockey with 185 of the nearly 450 Division III member institutions collecting points in at least one of the seven sport categories.
Hardin-Simmons University led the American Southwest Conference with 75 points earned from women's soccer (50) and volleyball (25) to tie seven other schools at 57th. The Cowgirls won ASC titles in both sports. The women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship while volleyball was a first-round NCAA Championship participant.
The Univesity of Texas at Tyler totaled 73 points and tied Ruters Camden in 65th place. The Patriots earned all of their Learfield Sports Directors' Cup points on a fifth-place tie in the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship where the ASC champions came up one win shy of a final four berth in the playoffs.
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and McMurry University each earned points in football. American Southwest Conference champion UMHB totaled 70 points after advancing to the national quarterfinals, tying four other institutions at 68th. McMurry, who advanced to the NCAA Football Championship second-round, tallied 53 points for a 10-way tie at No. 84.
The Univesity of Texas at Dallas completed the ASC honorees, totaling 25 points in women's soccer to place in a multi-team tie at No. 123. The Comets advanced to the first-round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championships.
Washington University (Mo.) leads the 2011-12 Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings with 372 points. The Bears scored points in five of the seven fall championships, including the Division III Women's Cross Country national title.
The first set of winter standings for the 2011-12 Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings will be released March 15, 2012.
