Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry, Texas Lutheran and East Texas Baptist all earned American Southwest Conference football victories on Saturday (Nov. 5), with UMHB clinching at least a share of the conference title and wrapping up the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Football Championship. McMurry put itself in sole possession of second place with a win over Louisiana College in a highly-anticipated matchup. Only Hardin-Simmons was idle.
No. 4/4 Mary Hardin-Baylor 77, Sul Ross State 13: Darius Wilson, Caleb Moore and Jake Sims all rushed for more than 100 yards and combined for six touchdowns as the Cru rolled to a victory in Belton, Texas, and clinched at least a share of its seventh straight ASC title. UMHB (9-0, 7-0 ASC), which improved to 14-0 all-time against the Lobos, also locked up the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA playoffs. UMHB’s starters built up a 49-6 lead at halftime and didn’t play in the second half. Tariekus Ellis took his second kickoff back for a TD this season, this time from 91 yards. Javicz Jones made eight tackles all in the first half for UMHB, which has now won 17 straight at home. SRSU (2-7, 1-6) got three catches for 116 yards and a score from Lee Carothers and 13 tackles from Robert Pyssen.
McMurry 49, No. 22/20 Louisiana College 28: Jake Mullin passed for 446 yards and four touchdowns – one in each quarter – to fuel an offense that cranked out 635 yards in a road win in Pineville, La. McMurry (7-2, 6-1 ASC), which has now won six straight games, also took over sole possession of second place in the ASC standings. Nationally-ranked LC (7-2, 5-2 ASC) fell to third place. Delfonte Diamond had six catches for 145 yards and a score, while R.J. Long snagged two of Mullin’s TD tosses. Will Morris had 10 tackles and D.J. Baiza had an interception to fuel a defense that held the Wildcats to just one TD each quarter. Jamie Bunting threw for 445 yards and two TDs, with his favorite target being Darnell Williams (nine catches for 244 yards and a score). Nate Janzen added 13 tackles and an INT for LC. McMurry led 27-14 at halftime.
Texas Lutheran 36, Mississippi College 16: The Bulldogs forced seven turnovers – four of which resulted in scores – and Allen Cain set a conference record with five field goals in a road win in Clinton, Miss. TLU (5-4, 4-3 ASC), which snapped a three-game skid, led just 13-7 early in the third quarter before pouring on 23 unanswered points to build up a 36-7 lead with 4:35 to play. Cain’s field goals came from 29, 26, 37, 53 and 49 yards out. Marcus Ferree made 11 tackles and Zack Weathersbuy had two interceptions to lead TLU. Ryan Jones had three catches for 112 yards and a score, while Lewis Williams snagged 10 passes for 64 yards and a TD to also fuel the Bulldogs. Jarrad Craine had 10 tackles – three for loss – and five pass break-ups for MC (3-6, 2-5 ASC).
East Texas Baptist 27, Howard Payne 7: The Tigers put together 20 unanswered points in the second half to pull away for a home victory in Marshall, Texas. ETBU (4-5, 3-4 ASC) got 145 rushing yards and two TDs from quarterback Sed Harris, who also threw for 245 yards and two scores. The Tigers’ defense – led by Jordan Hayes’ nine tackles and Benard Westbrooks’ interception – allowed only 280 yards of total offense and just a second quarter TD, a 1-yard run by Adrian Lighteard. Bo Ross had 11 tackles for HPU (1-9, 1-7 ASC), which closed out its 2011 season because of being idle next week.
