Hardin-Simmons, Mary Hardin-Baylor, East Texas Baptist and McMurry all finished out the American Southwest Conference football regular season with victories on Saturday (Nov. 12). By doing so, Mary Hardin-Baylor stayed unbeaten and wrapped up the outright conference title. UMHB has now won seven straight league titles and nine overall since starting football in 1998. McMurry secured the conference runner-up trophy. Only Howard Payne was idle. The NCAA Division III Football Championship bracket will be announced at 5 p.m. CST Sunday online at www.NCAA.com.

Hardin-Simmons 41, Louisiana College 27: Steven Rockwell ran for 166 yards and four touchdowns to guide the Cowboys at home in Abilene, Texas. With the win, HSU (6-4, 4-4 ASC) extended its winning season streak to 20 years. Rockwell, who had 32 carries, had two scores in the fourth quarter to allow the Cowboys to pull away from a 28-21 game at the end of the third. Caleb Christian had 12 tackles and an interception to fuel HSU’s defense, which shut out LC (7-3, 5-3 ASC) in the first quarter for the first time this season. Darnell Williams had eight catches for 141 yards and two TDs for the Wildcats, who got 16 tackles from Nate Janzen and 15 stops from Taylor Cottano.

No. 4/4 Mary Hardin-Baylor 56, Texas Lutheran 17: Caleb Moore ran for 265 yards and three touchdowns and the nationally-ranked Cru secured a perfect regular season and the outright conference title with a road victory in Seguin, Texas. UMHB (10-0, 8-0) exploded for 35 points in the first quarter, including two of Moore’s scores and a Geoff Myles 61-yard punt return for a TD. Ty Dooley led the Cru with 10 tackles, while Javicz Jones added nine tackles and a sack to fuel a unit that allowed just a field goal by Allen Cain in the second half. Kyle McNally had eight tackles and took back an interception 64 yards for a score to lead TLU (5-5, 4-4 ASC).

East Texas Baptist 54, Sul Ross State 14: Seth Hubbard threw for 225 yards and four touchdowns and Jair Stover ran for a career-high 207 yards and two scores as the Tigers cruised on the road in Alpine, Texas. ETBU (5-5, 4-4 ASC) improved to 6-0 all-time on the road against SRSU (2-8, 1-7 ASC). The Tigers also got five catches for 101 yards and two scores from Kwame Spikes. Collin Bieschke had 15 tackles, Jordan Hayes tallied 10 stops and Solahudeen Muhammad returned an interception 92 yards to also fuel ETBU. Lee Carothers had nine grabs for 112 yards and a TD, while Robert Pyssen had 14 tackles to lead the Lobos.

No. 20/24 McMurry 63, Mississippi College 38: Justin Johnson ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns and the War Hawks’ special teams accounted for two scores to help secure a conference runner-up finish at home in Abilene, Texas. Nationally-ranked McMurry (8-2, 7-1 ASC) closed the regular season on a seven-game winning streak. Jeret Smith took back a kickoff 100 yards for a TD, while D.J. Baiza added an 85-yard punt return for a score. McMurry broke open a 35-24 game at halftime with three straight TDs in the third quarter, including both of Johnson’s TDs. MC (3-7, 2-6 ASC) got two rushing scores from Steven Knight and two receiving TDs from DeMarrion Buford-Hughes. Jeremy Bertrand added two interceptions for the Choctaws.
