SAN ANTONIO -- On second-half goals from Jesus Morteo and Chris Powell, the UT Tyler men's soccer team shut out Trinity, 2-0, on Sunday to advance to the Sectional Round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
The Patriots will play the winner of DeSales and Randolph next weekend at a time and location to be determined by the NCAA.
Trinity (14-2-2) controlled possession for much of the first half, taking 10 total shots and seven on goal, but seven saves from Patriots' keeper Sergio Gardea kept the potent Tiger offense off the board. The Patriots took six shots in the first half, but only one on goal.
UT Tyler settled down into more of a even-paced attack during the second half, forcing the No. 4 Tigers to change their game plan. Jesus Morten took advantage of a Trinity miscue and used an assist from Chris Powell in the 66th minute to give the Patriots their first goal of the match.
Trinity responded with a relentless attack on the Patriots' goal, but Gardea and the defense held, and in the 71st minute, Victor Almendariz setup Chris Powell who gave the Patriots an insurance goal.
The win marks the first time UT Tyler has beaten the Tigers. Trinity eliminated the Patriots from the NCAA Championships in 2008 and 2010.
UT Tyler improves to 17-2-2 on the season and 3-1-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament.
