KERRVILLE, TX -- Jimmy Keener became the second Schreiner freshman in as many tournaments to win the individual title in his collegiate debut as 19th-ranked Schreiner men's golf team shot the low team score on the day and came in second place at the Schreiner Fall Classic. The Mountaineers shot the only sub-300 round (299) on an extremely windy final day and gained back 7 of the 11 shots they trailed 22nd-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor by going into the final round.
Keener shot back-to-back 71's to win by one shot over the two first round leaders. LeTourneau senior Spencer Rothluebber and UMHB's Johnathan Sustaita tied for second place, shooting 77 and 79 respectively after 66 and 64 in their first rounds to both finish at 143. The 71 tied the low round of the day as a stong cold front blew in and pounded the course all day long.
UMHB won the team title by four shots with a two round total of 583 to SU's 587. LeTourneau finished in third place with a two round total of 599, followed closely by Hardin-Simmons at 600. The Schreiner White team finished fifth at 619, narrowly edging Concordia-TX (621).
Keener was joined on the All-Tournament team by fellow freshman Cheyne Kendall. Kendall shot 71-76 and starts his collegiate career with back-to-back All-Tournament awards. Is his first start two weeks ago at the Al Jones Memorial in Tyler, TX, he won the individual title by shooting 70-71 to win hit title by two shots. Before this semester, Schreiner men's golfers had only had one medalist winner in the NCAA era and that was Jay Chapman at the Schreiner Spring Shootout at Comanche Trace in 2010.
Keener and Kendall had plenty of solid help over the two days. Sophomore Marcus Vargas shot 71-78 to finish 10th, sophomore Zach Reichenau was two shots back in 15th and junior Andy Bell was another two back in 18th place after both shot second round 76's.
Junior Kelby Ruiz led the white team and tied Vargas for 15th, followed by freshman Zach Oliver who also shot a second round 76. Two more freshmen, Matt Garrett and Tommy Xu were one shot apart and freshman Ian Davis was in 31st.
Coach Macosko on the result: "Coming into this fall, we thought we'd have a really strong team as the year progressed because we had a good group of returners and a strong freshman class. Obviously Cheyne and Jimmy have quickly distinguished themselves and hopefully can be consistent strong contributors. Marcus has played solidly so far this fall as well. With all the positives taking place through two tournaments, it will really get interesting next semester to see who else is going to raise their games. I know there is a lot of talent that hasn't broken through yet on this team and that's what makes this year potentially very special."
The Schreiner men finish their fall season next Monday and Tuesday at the Alamo City Classic at River Crossing GC in San Antonio.
