RICHARDSON, TX -- The American Southwest Conference had 10 of its 15 member institutions place in the prestigious 2009-2010 Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, with Texas-Tyler leading the way with a 54th place finish out of 311 schools. There are 432 active schools in Division III.
UT Tyler totaled 289.50 points, thanks to NCAA tournament appearances in the spring by its baseball, softball, men's golf, men's track and field, and men's and women's tennis teams. The Patriots won ASC titles in baseball, men's golf and men's and women's tennis. McMurry was the next highest-ranking ASC school with a 123rd place finish after totaling 160.50 points. Mississippi College (142 points) was 138th, while Hardin-Simmons (128 pts.) was 150th.
Other ASC schools placing were Mary Hardin-Baylor (172nd, 103 pts), East Texas Baptist (T177th, 100 pts.), Louisiana College (T197th, 89 pts.), Texas-Dallas (T197th, 89 pts.), Schreiner (253rd, 48 pts.) and Texas Lutheran (254th, 47 pts.).
Williams (Mass.) won the overall title with 1,292.25 points.
The program began during the 1993-94 season for Division I by NACDA and USA Today and was expanded in 1995-96 to include Division II, Division III and the NAIA. Each institution is awarded points based in a pre-determined number of sports for men and women. 18 Division III sports are included. The overall champion is the school who records the highest number of points.
