INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Four senior student-athletes from spring sports in the American Southwest Conference earned 2009-10 Spring NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, it was announced on Wednesday. East Texas Baptist University softball player Adrienne Meier, University of Texas at Tyler tennis player Nick Kreines, Texas Lutheran University baseball player Ryan Nokelby and McMurry University trackster Kenneth Wheeler all earned the one-time prestigious grant of $7,500.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.
Each sports season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.
The ASC had five student-athletes awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships during the 2009-10 academic year, as Hardin-SimmonsUniversity senior volleyball player Kaela Parnell was honored in the fall.
