RICHARDSON, Texas –– McMurry University football/baseball player Jake Mullin and East Texas Baptist University softball player Ayrika Henderson have been selected as the 2009-10 American Southwest Conference Athletes of the Year, the league office announced on Friday (June 18) after a vote of the conference’s sports information directors and ASC Outstanding Media Service Award members.
The American Southwest Conference Athlete of the Year award, in its eleventh year, recognizes the male and female student-athlete whose athletic accomplishments during the current athletic year best contributed to their sport, their institution’s overall athletic program and to the conference. Each ASC member institution nominates its campus Athlete of the Year award recipients to the conference-wide ballot.
Mullin becomes McMurry’s fourth male and second consecutive winner of the ASC Athlete of the Year award, joining tracksters Hann Ollison (2009-10), Cody Brotherton (2004-05) and Brad Parris (1999-00). McMurry has had a conference record-tying seven all-time winners, as golfer Brittany Cary (2003-04), trackster Talitha Belcher (2000-01) and basketball player Ogonna Merritt (1999-00) took female honors. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has also produced seven ASC Athletes of the Year. Henderson becomes East Texas Baptist’s first winner of the ASC’s top award and just the second softball player ever to be honored, joining Louisiana College’s Sandi Clark (2005-06).
Mullin (Burleson, TX / BHS), an exercise science major, was an ASC all-conference honorable mention football performer at quarterback as a sophomore and the ASC West Division Player of the Year on the baseball diamond as a junior outfielder. Mullin threw for 2,749 yards (305.4 per game), 25 touchdowns and just nine interceptions after taking three years off from football and was twice named ASC Offensive Player of the Week. He helped turn around a team that was winless the year before and ranked last in total offense. As a baseball player, he became the sixth player in McMurry history to earn all-America honors when he was named honorable mention by D3baseball.com. In addition, he was a first-team all-West Region selection by Rawlings/National Baseball Coaches Association. Mullin led the ASC in batting average (.462), on-base percentage (.570), walks (33) and slugging percentage (.871). He hit 11 home runs, drove in 44 runs and had four assists from the outfield. He put together a hitting streak that reached 19 games.
Henderson (Nacogdoches, TX / NHS), a nursing major, helped East Texas Baptist claim the first NCAA Division III national championship in school history and just the third in conference history. The senior right-hander went 21-7 with a 1.74 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 157 1/3 innings. Henderson also recorded 17 complete games, four shutouts and held opponents to just a .190 batting average against her. She was the winning pitcher in six of the Lady Tigers’ final seven games, including the national title-clinching 5-4 victory over Linfield. Her three wins at the national championship earned her all-tournament honors. Overall in the NCAA playoffs, she went 6-1 with a 0.84 ERA in 33 1/3 innings that spanned 10 appearances. Henderson was an ASC first-team performer in the East Division, which sent four teams to the NCAA postseason. She was named an all-academic winner as well. Henderson began the season being dubbed the ASC East preseason pitcher of the year. ETBU awarded her with its female Top Tiger honor.
In the ASC Athlete of the Year men’s voting, Mississippi College senior quarterback Adam Shaffer (Brandon, MS / BHS) finished second and Mary Hardin-Baylor senior football player Bryson Tucker (Caldwell, TX / CHS) was third. Shaffer was the ASC offensive player of the year after throwing a league-high 29 touchdown passes, while Tucker logged significant time on both sides of the ball for the top-rated offense and defense in the league and was also a return man. Both guided a share of the conference title. On the women’s side, Louisiana College senior softball player Jodi Montagnino (Baton Rouge, LA / Christian Life HS) was second in balloting, followed by Hardin-Simmons University senior volleyball player Kaela Parnell (Carrolton, TX / Hebron HS). Montagnino led the league with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs to pace an ASC title, while Parnell was the most valuable player in the West after registering a league-high .356 hitting percentage and helping produce a division title.
