Women's Tennis All-ASC Awards Announced

RICHARDSON, Texas –– University of Texas at Tyler junior Michelle Hagler and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore Megan Aarhus have been voted division players of the year to highlight the 2010 American Southwest Conference women’s tennis awards as voted on by the league’s 13 head coaches, the ASC office announced on Tuesday (May 4).

Hagler (Austin, TX / Westwood HS) earned the title of East Division Player of the Year after posting nine wins – including a 4-0 mark in division play –in No. 1 singles. Hagler also helped the Patriots to the East Division and conference title.

Aarhus (Georgetown, TX / GHS) was named West Division Player of the Year after going 15-2 in No. 1 singles play – including a perfect 6-0 mark in division play – and guiding the Lady Cru to a berth into the ASC Championships.

Both Hagler and Aarhus were also named to their respective division’s First Team at the No. 1 singles position. Hagler was the ASC All-Conference selection at No. 1 singles and a first team East pick at No. 1 doubles with teammate Ashley Albro. Aarhus was a first team West selection at No. 1 doubles with teammate and twin sister Mallory Aarhus after an 18-0 record.

Also appearing on the ASC All-Conference Team were Mallory Aarhus (No. 2 singles), Texas-Tyler’s Sydni Hermsdorf (No. 3 singles), Hardin-Simmons University’s Brittany Brazell (No. 4 singles) and Texas-Tyler’s Lauren Giovannini (No. 5 singles) and Brittany Trich (No. 6 singles). Other than UMHB’s twin sisters Aarhus and Aarhus (No. 1s), Texas-Tyler’s Hermsdorf and Emily McRae (No. 2s) and Lauren Nielsen and Heather Harmon (No. 3s) were honored at doubles. Albro was an at-large selection as a member of the ASC champion team.

Texas-Tyler’s Albro, a sophomore, (East) and McMurry University freshman Lindsay Bloomer (West) were named newcomers of the year, while University of Texas at Dallas’s Rachel Houston (East) and McMurry’s Whitney Zugai(West) took top freshman honors. Mississippi College senior Emily Newman (East) and Hardin-Simmons junior Lisa Mertz (West) were voted sportsmanship athletes of the year. Texas-Tyler’s Chris Bizot (East), who guided an ASC title and East Division crown, and Hardin-Simmons’ Shane Williford (West), who guided a runner-up finish for the ASC championship and a West crown, took top coaching honors.
