PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Texas at Tyler men’s tennis team edged Mary Washington, 5-3, on Friday to advance to the finals of the Pittsburgh, Pa. Regional in the 2010 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships.
The Patriots (16-6) battled back from a 2-1 deficit in doubles where their only point came from David Ashlock and Andrew Reznik at No. 1 doubles.
Josh Chavez evened the team score for UT Tyler at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over UMW’s Will Apperson. Ashlock then picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sam Wichlin at No. 1 singles to put the Patriots up, 3-2.
Playing at No. 4 singles, UT Tyler’s Kevin Wright earned a 7-6, 6-1 win and Brad Fenter battled to three sets to earn the 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 point to seal the victory for the Patriots.
Mary Washington, ranked No. 18 in the country, finishes its season with a 13-12 record.
UT Tyler advances to the regional championship round where they will face the Carnegie Mellon/Ohio Northern winner at 10 a.m. Saturday.
