TYLER, TX – The University of Texas at Tyler men's and women's tennis teams captured their third straight American Southwest Conference Championships on Sunday at Summers Tennis Center and earned the league's automatic berth into the NCAA postseason.
"Everybody came together today and played really well," sixth-year head coach Chris Bizot said. "Our goal every year is to win the conference and we've been able to do that this year and everyone is really excited. We had a lot of fans out here that were all cheering, and to have that support was really big for us."
The women opened the day with a 5-1 win over Hardin-Simmons and denied the Cowgirls their 10th championship in program history, while the men prevailed 5-0 over McMurry University.
Wins at No's 2 and 3 doubles for the Patriots, 8-2 behind Emily McRae/Sydni Hermsdorf and 8-4 behind Heather Harmon/Lauren Nielsen, gave them an early 2-1 lead in the match into singles play.
Lauren Giovannini's 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles – her 10th win in-a-row – pushed the lead to 3-1 before Hermsdorf at No. 3 and Nielsen at No. 2 capped the match for the fifth point.
The men rebounded from a poor showing in doubles play yesterday against LeTourneau, and swept all three points in doubles play that put McMurry back on its heels. The All-American duo of Brad Fenter/Nick Kreines pulled out a 9-7 win at No. 2 to secure the final point into singles action.
Adam Chirhart won his fourth-straight match at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1 over Daniel Oliveras before Kevin Wright closed out a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles that secured the conference championship.
Both teams will await their pairings for the NCAA Tennis Championships set for May 13-15.
