HORSESHOE BAY, Texas – Schreiner University produced its first-ever women’s golf conference title with a come-from-behind win Tuesday at the 2010 American Southwest Conference Golf Championships.
At the Apple Rock course at the Horseshoe Bay Resort, Schreiner posted the low round of the tournament, a second-round total of 334, and scored a four-shot victory over the University of Texas at Tyler.
Schreiner carded a 342 on Monday and trailed the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor by seven shots going into Tuesday’s final round. UMHB held the overnight lead after an opening-round 335, but The Lady Cru posted a 355 on Tuesday and dropped to third.
Schreiner was lifted to the top by Sarah Stillwell’s 77 on Tuesday. After an 85 on Monday, Stillwell shot to the runner-up position on the leader board with her final round score.
The team title for Schreiner is the first for the university since 2000, when the Schreiner baseball team captured the ASC crown. It is the fourth ASC team title in school history.
Schreiner earned the ASC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships. The national championship appearance for Schreiner will be its first as an NCAA DIII university.
“They keep grinding,” said Schreiner Head Coach Ron Macosko. “They make a lot of mistakes, but they don’t let it get to them. They just played really hard-nosed golf, if there is such a thing. Our players did that, and we are really proud of them.”
Leslie Lee of LeTourneau won the women’s individual title for a second straight year. Lee, a junior, followed Monday’s 80 with a 77 on Tuesday. Lee won by five shots over Stillwell.
“I was really excited to hear that,” said Lee, after learning she was the first repeat individual champion in ASC Women’s Golf history. “I had no idea that I was the first one to do it back-to-back. It’s really nice to have your hard work pay-off. My coach (Lauren Gentry) has just encouraged me so much to keep being determined no matter what I shoot, and that is what I did.”
After Schreiner (676), Texas-Tyler (680) and UMHB (690) took the top three team places, McMurry (692), LeTourneau (698), Texas Lutheran (738), and the University of Texas at Dallas (886) completed the field.
TLU’s Angela Aufderhaar was named the ASC Women’s Golf Sportsmanship of the Year award winner for the second consecutive year.
First Team All-ASC awards went to Lee, Stillwell, Christi Williams of UMHB, Jennifer King of Texas-Tyler, and Candice Nishimura of LeTourneau. Williams and King tied for third, and Nishimura finished fifth.
Second Team All-ASC awards went to Callie Rice of Texas-Tyler, Liz Calderon of Schreiner, Katie Harris of Texas-Tyler, Aufderhaar, and Katie McElroy of McMurry. Rice and Calderon tied for sixth. Harris, Aufderhaar, and McElroy tied for eighth.
