HORSESHOE BAY, Texas – The University of Texas at Tyler men’s golf team cruised to a 34-shot victory at the 2010 American Southwest Conference Golf Championships.

At Ram Rock Golf Course at the Horseshoe Bay Resort, Texas-Tyler produced the lowest score during each of the three rounds at the tournament. The Patriots posted rounds of 289 and 293 on Monday and finished with a 294 on Tuesday for a tournament total of 876.

“We’ve had five guys that have played well all year, and they continued it,” said Texas-Tyler Head Coach King Campbell.

The Patriots put three players among the top five in the individual results. After Ellis, Joey Rippel tied for third after rounds of 70, 73, and 79. Bobby Ennis tied for fifth with scores of 75, 75, and 74.

Texas-Tyler won its first-ever ASC men’s golf title. The Patriots earned the conference’s automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships. Texas-Tyler received an at-large bid in 2009 and finished fourth at the national tournament.

The Patriots were led to the 2010 ASC title by tournament medalist Brandon Ellis. The senior led wire-to-wire after rounds of 68, 68 and 73. He finished at 4-under on the par-71, 6,405-yard course.

“Everything went perfect, according to plan,” said Ellis. “I was putting good, hitting good, and keeping the ball in play. I wanted to peak at the right time, and it seems like I have.”

Ellis won by eight shots over Concordia Texas golfer Michael Goldwater, who carded rounds of 76, 73, and 68.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (910), Schreiner (914), and Concordia Texas (923) finished second, third and fourth, respectively in the team race.

Mississippi College (924), University of Texas at Dallas (935), and Texas Lutheran (937) took home the fifth through seven spots, respectively.

McMurry (949) and Hardin-Simmons (966) finished in eighth and ninth positions.

First Team All-ASC honors went to Ellis, Goldwater, Elliott Bingham of Mississippi College, Joey Rippel of Texas-Tyler, Brent Marshall of Texas-Dallas, and Bobby Ennis of Texas-Tyler.

Second Team All-ASC honors went to Andrew Long of TLU, Kyle Grona of Schreiner, Ryan Berry of UMHB, Eddie Diaz de Leon of Concordia Texas, Spencer Rothluebber of LeTourneau, Johnathan Sustaita of UMHB, and Jacob Walsh of Texas-Tyler.

Mississippi College senior Joel Richardson was voted ASC Men’s Golf Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
