Mary Hardin-Baylor, Texas Lutheran, East Texas Baptist and Louisiana College all collected victories on Saturday (Nov. 6) during Week 10 of the American Southwest Conference football season. Nationally-ranked and unbeaten UMHB claimed at least a share of the conference title and locked up the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Football Championship. Only nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons (8-1, 6-1 ASC) was idle this week.
Mary Hardin-Baylor 76, Sul Ross State 12: The nationally-ranked Cru scored 10 offensive touchdowns and set a team record for points scored in a game as they rolled to a victory in Alpine, Texas, that locked up at least a share of the ASC title and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. UMHB (9-0, 7-0 ASC) got 118 yards and three scores on 18 carries from Quincy Daniels all in the first 21 minutes. LiDarral Bailey also accounted for three scores (two passing, one rushing), while D.J. Monroe and Damian Davis each found the end zone twice to chip in for the Cru, who led 41-6 at halftime. SRSU (1-7, 1-6 ASC), which lost its sixth straight, got 224 yards passing from Terrance Young. Jared Favorite (seven tackles and two fumble recoveries) and Tracy Cooper (70-yard interception return) led the Cru on defense.
Texas Lutheran 42, Mississippi College 23: Mitchel Bunger accounted for four touchdowns – two passing, two rushing – and the Bulldogs wrapped up a 4-1 mark on their home turf in Seguin, Texas with a win. TLU (4-5, 3-4 ASC), which built up a 35-3 lead late in the third quarter, also got a career-high 12 catches and two scores from Steven Thrash and 92 yards and two rushing TDs from Dominique Hardaway. The Bulldogs were 4-for-4 in red zone scoring chances. MC (4-5, 2-5 ASC) got 247 passing and two TDs from Tommy Reyer, who also rushed for a team-high 47 yards. Brandon Thomas (13 tackles, nine solo) and Jack Moses (10 tackles) led TLU on defense, while Horace Allen had 10 stops for MC.
East Texas Baptist 24, Howard Payne 0: Sed Harris ran for 130 yards and passed for 116 more, while the Tigers’ defense posted the program’s first shutout since 2003 in a victory in Brownwood, Texas. ETBU (4-5, 3-4 ASC) rushed for 333 yards as a team and Brett Peddicord kicked a 32-yard field goal to put the Tigers up 10-0 at halftime. Jordan Hayes (nine tackles, 1.5 for loss of 17 yards) and Victor Flores (interception returned 67 yards) spearheaded a unit that recorded four sacks. HPU (2-8, 1-6 ASC), which lost its sixth straight, got 13 catches and 109 yards from Cody Hambrick. Dustin McClure added 19 tackles for the Yellow Jackets.
Louisiana College 35, McMurry 32: Darnell Williams intercepted a pass in the endzone with 10 seconds remaining to seal a wild 35-32 win for the Wildcats in Abilene, Texas. LC (6-3, 6-1 ASC) won its sixth straight game. The Wildcats took their final lead after Ben McLaughlin engineered a 10-play, 83-yard drive that ended with an 18-yard TD pass to D’Mario Parker with 54 seconds to play. Williams, who had five catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns from his receiver position, was inserted on the game’s final play from the 5-yard line as a safety. McLaughlin finished with 399 yards and four TDs. McMurry (5-4, 3-4 ASC), which was playing without injured standout quarterback Jake Mullin, got 149 yards on 28 carries from Austin Brooks and eight catches for 119 yards and two scores from R.J. Long. Brodrick Fredrick and Nate Janzen each had 11 tackles for LC. Will Morris made 10 stops and returned an interception for a TD, while Desmond Baker had two picks to lead McMurry’s defense.
