Football Week 11: Regular Season Ends

Mary Hardin-Baylor, Louisiana College, McMurry and East Texas Baptist all ended the regular season with victories on Saturday (Nov. 13) during Week 11 of American Southwest Conference football. Nationally-ranked UMHB claimed the outright conference title and a finished with a perfect regular season. LC took sole possession of second place with a shootout win over nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons. Only Howard Payne had finished up its slate last week.

Mary Hardin-Baylor 81, Texas Lutheran 3: In Belton, Texas, Quincy Daniels became the conference’s all-time leading rusher, the nationally-ranked Cru rolled up 699 yards of total offense and UMHB moved the chains a league-record 39 times to wrap up the outright ASC title and just the second perfect regular season in program history. UMHB (10-0, 8-0 ASC) has now won six straight and eight of the last nine conference crowns. Daniels, D.J. Monroe (122 yards rushing), Leo Gutierrez (119 yards rushing), LiDarral Bailey, Stephen Salinas, Bobby Whan, Kyle Noack and Tariekus Ellis all accounted for touchdowns for the Cru, which also set an ASC record for margin of victory. Daniels broke the old rushing mark of 3,672 yards set by UMHB’s Justin Bryson from 2002-05. Mary Hardin-Baylor’s defense, led by Robert Curl (nine tackles), allowed just 160 yards of total offense. TLU (4-6, 3-5 ASC) got its only score on a 37-yard field goal by Allen Cain in the third quarter. Brandon Thomas had 15 tackles to lead the Bulldogs.

Louisiana College 44, Hardin-Simmons 42: After pulling within two points with just 29 seconds to play, the Cowboys recovered an onside kick and put together a drive that resulted in a 39-yard field goal try that was no good as the Wildcats held on for a wild victory in Pineville, La., that sealed sole possession of second place in the ASC. LC (7-3, 7-1 ASC) extended its winning streak to six games after starting the season 1-4. Nationally-ranked HSU (8-2, 6-2 ASC) lost for the first time since September 25. Senior quarterbacks Ben McLaughlin of LC and Justin Feaster of HSU each threw for over 300 yards and five touchdowns. HSU’s only lead came at 12:18 in the third quarter, 35-30, on a 19-yard TD run by ZaVious Robbins, who also had nine catches for 103 yards. Thomas Labian added six catches for 151 yards and two TDs for HSU, while DeMario Parker (eight catches for 128 yards and a score) and Darnell Williams (two receiving TDs) excelled for LC. Nate Janzen had a game-high 12 tackles for the Wildcats.

McMurry 28, Mississippi College 17: In Clinton, Miss., third-string quarterback Landy Gunter threw for four touchdowns and Austin Brooks ran for 118 yards as McMurry posted its first winning season since 2000. McMurry (6-4, 4-4 ASC) led 21-10 at halftime and never trailed. Gunter, filling in for injured starter Jake Mullin and backup Stephen Warren, finished 27 of 38 for 279 yards and two interceptions. MC (4-6, 2-6 ASC) was held to a season-low 190 yards of total offense. McMurry’s R.J. Long hauled in two TD passes and Marcus Franklin and Eric Shaffer each added one. Tommy Reyer and Austin Gray each had a TD toss for MC, which got a 47-yard field goal from Chris Campbell. McMurry’s Nick Hernandez had 15 tackles, including 3.5 for loss, and 2.5 sacks. Jeremy Bertrand (15) and Luke Petitto (11) each had double-digit take downs for MC.

East Texas Baptist 47, Sul Ross State 28: Quarterback Sed Harris ran for 159 yards and passed for 111 more and the Tigers put together a 22-point second quarter on their way to victory in Marshall, Texas. ETBU (5-5, 4-4 ASC), which never trailed, got second-quarter TDs from Harris, Corey George and Jair Stover, while Brett Peddicord added a 28-yard field goal. Terrance Young threw two TD passes for SRSU (1-8, 1-7 ASC), which ended its season on a seven-game skid. ETBU’s defense accounted for three interceptions (Victor Flores, Jordan Hayes and Solahudeen Muhammad). Flores also returned a blocked punt 19 yards for a score. ETBU’s Matt Tarver had 1.5 sacks to bring his ASC-leading total to 8.5. Julian Johnson returned a pick 14 yards for a TD to pace SRSU.
