PINEVILLE, La. - The University of Texas at Tyler men's soccer team steamrolled their way into their fourth American Southwest Conference Championship Thursday night, downing Louisiana College, 6-0, and earning the right to host the league's championship tournament next week.
The Patriots, who last won the ASC title in 2008 - a year in which they also won the tournament title and advanced two rounds into the NCAA Tournament, improve to 10-2-1 on the season and 9-1-1 in conference play. They will close out the regular season Saturday at Mississippi College.
Elijah Shipman wasted no time putting UT Tyler on the board, using an assist from Justin NeSmith to give the Patriots their first goal just 2:20 into the game. Victor Almendariz capitalized on an assist from Troy Coffee to put the Patriots up, 2-0, in the 9th minute and Shipman scored his second goal of the game at 11:27.
NeSmith and Coffee added goals of their own in the first half, giving the Patriots a 5-0 lead at the break.
UT Tyler's final goal came early in the second half when James Winkler found the back of the net courtesy of an assist from Joseph Ramirez.
The UT Tyler defense held Louisiana College shot-less while the offense racked up 33 total attempts.
Louisiana College drops to 0-16 overall and 0-11 in the ASC with the loss.
With the regular season conference championship in hand, the Patriots will host the ASC Championship Tournament Nov. 5-7 at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.
The field and bracket for the ASC tournament will be announced Sunday on the conference's website, www.ASCsports.org.
