Mary Hardin-Baylor, Hardin-Simmons, Texas Lutheran and McMurry all came away victorious in American Southwest Conference football action on Saturday (October 2), the fifth weekend of the season. UMHB was the only squad to prevail on the road and remained unbeaten. Mississippi College was the only league team idle.
Mary Hardin-Baylor 42, Louisiana College 38: Bronson Shaw picked off a Ben McLaughlin pass in the end zone with 42 seconds remaining to seal a wild victory for the nationally-ranked Cru in Pineville, La. UMHB (4-0, 2-0 ASC) and LC (1-3, 1-1 ASC) traded leads five times after halftime. LiDarral Bailey passed for a career-high 183 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 103 more and two scores to pace UMHB, which overcame a 10-point deficit early in the second quarter. McLaughlin threw for 368 yards and five TDs, including three to Darnell Williams (six caches, 130 yards) and two to Jordan Rideaux (12 catches, 137 yards). The last McLaughlin-to-Williams connection gave LC its final lead, 38-35, with just over 6 minutes to play before Bailey orchestrated a nine-play, 76-yard drive that provided the final result with a 5-yard scamper on a keeper. The Wildcats drove from their own 44-yard line all the way to the UMHB 3 before Shaw’s pick. UMHB’s Damian Davis caught five balls for 143 yards and two TDs, while Javicz Jones had 11 tackles. LC’s Taylor Cattano had 14 stops and Nate Janzen added 12. UMHB improved to 11-0 all-time in the series.

Hardin-Simmons 49, East Texas Baptist 17: The nationally-ranked Cowboys shook off a sluggish start and scored 42 unanswered points to cruise to a victory in Abilene, Texas. HSU (4-1, 2-1 ASC) trailed 17-7 at the 10:34 mark of the second quarter before a Justin Feaster 22-yard run began string of five straight touchdowns. ETBU (2-3, 1-2 ASC) had built its lead on a Brett Peddicord field goal, Skyler Womack TD catch and a Sed Harris TD run. The Cowboys defense clamped down from there, holding ETBU to 137 yards of offense after halftime. Derek Grant ran for a career-best 143 yards and three scores on 23 carries, while ZaVious Robbins caught nine balls for 138 yards and a TD to lead an HSU offense that cranked out 33 first downs. Joe Sanders had 11 tackles to lead the Cowboys’ defense unit. Harris passed for 152 yards and ran for 82 more, while Cody Finch had a game-high 12 tackles to lead ETBU. HSU improved to 11-0 all-time in the series.
Texas Lutheran 28, Sul Ross State 11: Mitchell Bunger threw three touchdown passes and Dominique Hardaway ran for 106 yards as the Bulldogs collected a homecoming win in Seguin, Texas. TLU (2-2, 2-1 ASC) scored a touchdown in each quarter and never trailed. Charles Cooper had a 26-yard run, while Hardaway, Ckody Burton and Robert Salinas all caught 20-plus-yard passes for TLU’s scores. SRSU (1-2, 1-1 ASC) found the end zone just once on a BJ Vickers 96-yard strike from Terrance Young with 4:47 to play. Vickers finished with 130 yards on three catches. Jack Moses posted a game-high 11 tackles, Kyle McNally snared an interception and Dominic Zeigler had a sack for TLU. Keyston Player had eight tackles for the Lobos.
McMurry 51, Howard Payne 19: Jake Mullin threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns and McMurry scored the game’s final 32 points to cruise to a victory in Abilene, Texas. McMurry (3-2, 1-2 ASC), which trailed by as many as 13 points in the first quarter, used an 8-yard pass from Mullin to Eric Shaffer with 3:41 left before halftime to take a 23-19 lead and start a string of five straight touchdowns that provided the final tally. R.J. Long led all McMurry receivers with seven catches for 169 yards and a score. Shaffer and Mullin also hooked up for McMurry’s first score midway through the first quarter. HPU (2-3, 1-2 ASC) got off to its fast start with a Zach Hubbard TD toss to Andre Dean and a 57-yard interception return for a score by Demetrius Cody. Jimmy Terrell had eight tackles to lead a McMurry defense that totaled four sacks and snared three INTs. Cosy led the Yellow Jackets with seven tackles and Joey Lewis added a sack.
