Football Week 7: Plenty of Points, Records Fall

McMurry, Hardin-Simmons, East Texas Baptist and Louisiana College all collected league wins, while Mary Hardin-Baylor knocked off a non-conference opponent on Saturday (Oct. 16) during Week 7 of the American Southwest Conference football season. McMurry, HSU and LC all scored more than 60 points and set a conference record of some sort.

McMurry 63, Texas Lutheran 14: Jake Mullin threw for 476 yards and seven touchdowns, R.J. Long caught 10 passes for 206 yards and two scores and the McMurry offense set a conference record with 534 passing yard during a homecoming victory in Abilene, Texas. Mullin was 26-for-38 and did not throw an interception, leading McMurry (5-2, 3-2 ASC) to its third straight win. Marcus Franklin (156 receiving yards, two TDs) and Austin Brooks (two receiving TDs, one rushing score) also chipped in to McMurry’s record-setting day. Kerry Gamble had 10 tackles to guide McMurry’s defense, which totaled four interceptions and did not allow a point after halftime. Charles Cooper ran for 82 yards and a TD, while Emmanuel Asahene had a sack to lead TLU (3-3, 2-2 ASC).

Hardin-Simmons 73, Sul Ross State 7: Justin Feaster threw for four touchdowns in the first half, seven different Cowboys scored touchdowns and HSU rolled up a conference-record 759 yards of offense in a rout in front of a homecoming crowd in Abilene, Texas. Nationally-ranked HSU (6-1, 4-1 ASC), which has won three straight, got 398 yards on the ground and 361 through the air to break a record of 749 yards it set back in 1998. Devin Carter ran for 114 yards, Derrick Grant had two rushing TDs, Thomas Labian caught five passes for 116 yards and ZaVious Robbins had three receiving TDs to accent Feaster, who did not take a snap after halftime. Jay Wise had an interception and four pass break-ups to lead the Cowboys’ defense, which improved its strak to 160 minutes without allowing an offensive score. SRSU (1-4, 1-3 ASC) got its only touchdown in the second quarter on a 76-yard kickoff return by John Zamora.

East Texas Baptist 28, Mississippi College 20: Sed Harris ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, while the Tigers defense recorded four sacks and picked off three passes to collect a road win in Clinton, Miss. ETBU (3-4, 2-3 ASC), which snapped a two-game skid, took its final lead, 14-10, early in the third quarter on a 59-yard scamper by Harris. Victor Flores soon followed with a 23-yard return on a punt block by Cody Finch to stretch the lead for good. John Chitty had 11 tackles and Evan Beaton had seven stops, 1.5 sacks and an interception to pace the Tigers on defense. MC (2-4, 0-4), which dropped its fourth straight, got 104 yards on seven catches by Randall Pharr and 10 tackles from Horace Allen. Michael Rodriguez (45-yard) and Dale Wallace (20) each hit field goals for the Choctaws.

Louisiana College 62, Howard Payne 28: Ben McLaughlin threw for 491 yards and six touchdowns, breaking the conference’s all-time passing yardage record in the process during a home win in Pineville, La. McLaughlin’s career passing yardage now sits at 10,660, eclipsing the mark of 10,246 that Adam King of Howard Payne set from 2001-04. Darnell Williams was the favorite target of McLaughlin, who found him eight times for 177 yards and three TDs. LC (3-3 , 3-1 ASC) scored three touchdowns – including a 1-yard sneak by McLaughlin – in the second quarter to break open a 21-21 tie and cruise to the victory. Peter Ford had six tackles and 1.5 sacks to lead the Wildcats’ defense. HPU (2-5, 1-4 ASC), which dropped its third straight, got a 99-yard kickoff return for a TD in the third quarter by Brandon Young.

Mary Hardin-Baylor 31, Southern Oregon 10: LiDarral Bailey ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns and Quincy Daniels totaled 106 and another score as the nationally-ranked Cru got a non-conference win in Ashland, Ore. UMHB (6-0, 4-0 ASC) never trailed but did not get on the scoreboard until the 12:58 mark in the second quarter when Bailey scampered eight yards for a TD. After the teams traded field goals before halftime, Bailey and Daniels went back-to-back with rushing TDs in the third quarter to put the victory away for the Cru. Mike Maldanodo forced a fumble on the first play in the second half to set up UMHB’s score that made it 17-3. Ty Dooley made 11 tackles and Silvio Diaz added two sacks to also pace the Cru’s defense. Vance Beach had seven catches for 100 yards, while Dayne Mendes had nine tackles, 1.5 sacks and an INT to lead SOU (2-5).
