BELTON, TX --- The Hardin-Simmons men's soccer team captured the American Southwest Conference Championship with a 4-2 penalty kick win over Mary Hardin-Baylor after the two teams finished in a scoreless tie after 110 minutes of regulation and overtime play, Sunday afternoon at Cru Sports Plex.
Both teams had several scoring chances throughout the game, but goalkeepers Logan Waters for Hardin-Simmons and Mark Miller of Mary Hardin-Baylor were both solid and sometimes spectacular. Each finished the game with eight saves. Each had a highlight reel save in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
UMHB had a narrow 21-20 lead in shots and both teams had eight shots on goal.
Once the game went to penalty kicks the Cowboys got makes from Jeff Ridley and Isaiah Hicks on the first two tries and UMHB made their first try and Waters saved the second one. Patrick Almond then missed for HSU and UMHB made their shot to make it 3-2. Senior Estevan Arbaiza stepped to the line and made his shot to give HSU the 4-2 win in penalty kicks.
“I thought it was a great game, I hate it for their kids because it is so tough to lose a game in penalty kicks, but I am proud of our team,” HSU head coach Dan Heger said. They have been a hard working group this season and I am glad their hard work was rewarded.”
The Cowboys are now 10-2-6 on the year and Mary Hardin-Baylor is 14-3-1 overall. HSU gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UMHB will hope for an at-large bid to the NCAAs. The field will be announced on Monday morning. Chris O'Brien was named the MVP of the tournament for the Cowboys. Arbaiza, Hicks and Waters were also named to the all-tournament team.
